Rust on tailgate octy estate 55 reg

Featured Replies

Thanks for the heads up mate, Ive just checked my 4mth old car, and mine is starting to crack also. Guess where Im going first thing tomorrow.......Yep straight to the dealers, see what they have to say about it!

They dont tell you all this when you are spending the best part of £20k on a new car!!!

My dealer refused to repair it and wants to keep an eye on it saying if they repair it the same will happen again and again.

Took mine to Rainworth Skoda today, and they said there wasnt anything wrong! Apparently it is caused by the rubber sealant used to seal the gap between the two skins used to make up the boot lid, and if you look closely round the doors (underneath the rubber seal) it will be the same there!

All they suggested was taking some pictures and email them to their warrenty co-ordinator, and get him to open up a record on their/Skoda`s database. Then if anything does develop in the future, then they have a record with todays date as the start.

I checked my brothers car (8mth`s old) and a new one in the showroom, and both were the same cracking in exactly the same place.

Dont think it helped, when I said I had seen the issue raised on here, and then checked mine and found it cracking. The lad in parts was less than complementary about BriSkoda!!!

The dealer took pictures of mine last year to organise a warranty repair ,but now the bodyshop is saying they cant do anything more until skoda come up with a proper solution . I dont think its acceptable for rust to appear on such a new car but my dealership have been great in trying to help and have kept me informed with what is happening

I've seen it on mine, and suspect every single one has it. Possibly even the new update for this year so think a mass effort on behalf of Skoda is warranted. This is crap for a brand new car, and I haven't seen rust on a modern car since the early 80s.

I'm still waiting for my dealer to get back to me. Reckons he's waiting for a specailist from Skoda. It will be interesting to see what he says cos now the crack is progressing quite nicely towards the number plate.

Anyone had any updates from Skoda on this? Only Im still waiting for Rainworth to sort their lifes out and get me an answer, apparently they have registered it with Skoda and thats it!

I'm finding this whole thread rather depressing! I've just sold my MkI Octy hatch, which had done 140,000 and was a Nov 1998 reg; I'd had it since April '99. When I sold it a couple of weeks back there wasn't a trace of rust anywhere on it - not even where the paint had been chipped or damaged. I had held the Skoda manufacturing process as a model of rustproofing virtue to friends - in marked contrast to my wife's Ka, which was a similar age and was riddled with rust - even as far as perforations.

Besides the sheer fun I'd had with the MkI, one of the reasons I've just bought a brand new MkII was the apparent durability of the paintwork - besides lack of rust, ny old car still looked really shiny, depite never having been garaged or hand waxed.

Is there a suspicion then that Skoda have cut production costs with the MkII at the expense of durability? Doh - just when I thought it was safe to go back in the water!

Skoda said touch it up, dealer said no.

Not because they didn't want to do it, but because they can't repair it effectively. As stated above if they paint it, the thing *will* crack again. The only difference would be that the dealers paint shop would have to repair it again rather than it being a skoda issue.

Almost worth going to watchdog over it, bearing in mind that I've seen 10 year old cars with no such issues.

Yup - see my post immediately above!

While your about it check under the front doors that seems to be a common place for rust even on a new car.

Where exactly under the door are you talking about? Is it the section that closes up against the seals and if so it's well worth cleaning the seals and lubricating them with silicon lubricating spray or grease every few months to keep them supple.

my dealer is still waiting for skoda to get back to them regarding this issue, they have taken more photos of the affected area and sent them to skoda again . There is now a definite crack in the weld between the two panels so its now up to skoda to come up with a solution . My dealer said it will probably be a new bootlid other than try to repair it as they cannot gurantee the repair:confused:
