Rust on tailgate octy estate 55 reg

Featured Replies

Check your tailgates chums, mine was rusty and has been repaired by the excellent Hortons of Linclon. I took it to my local dealer Hazledens of Doncaster and they refused to do it, the muppet in their bodyshop said it had been painted before and quoted me £300 to do it!!!

Where, exactly, did the rust appear? I have a 2003 estate 130PD and I would be devastated if I found any rust, anywhere!

I don't suppose it's on the edges of the boot, in line with the designed in "crease" above the reg plate.

Yep, that's just where it was plus another bit about as big as an old 5 p piece a bit further down.

Incidentally I've seen a few more just the same I'm an expert at spotting it now.

any pics please?

Interesting, I've just been told it won't be an issue and that it was due to the mastic.

Did yours start as cracks on the inside of the boot lid?

any pics please?

It's an Octy II thing.

Look at the boot lid from the outside and you will see a line across it.

Follow that line to both ends and you will see small cracks in the paintwork at each end of the bootlid on the inside/end.

mines started as cracks on the inside of the boot lid and started to rust on the outside were it cracked through . Got it repaired under warranty though  the dealer had to send pictures through to skoda uk and a tech at the factory to get it approved though.

I got it approved for repair, but the paint shop said they couldn't paint it without it cracking again.

Grrr time to call skoda again then tomorrow me thinks :(

I've checked a couple of brand new hatchbacks in showrooms and the paint on them looks suspicious where has been described above as well. Not very good!

I was told it's because they put mastic there to make the surface smoother rather than the hardish edge of the line and then paint over the mastic. Apparently the mastic can expand/contract enough to cause the paint to crack.

its no wonder I can't find, just realised you are referring to the estate !

No I'm referring to the hatch, but the MK II not the MK I

Checked my Octy hatch the other day and its cracked and is suspiciously starting to look like rust is appearing! Plus the roof is doing the same where the ridge is:mad: It's just over a year old!!! Dealer said they will fix it. Checked an unregistered one in the showroom and the cracks on that tailgate were even bigger!!!

thought the metal was supposed to be galvanised to prevent rusting?

Good point. I hope you're correct. I've driven many rust buckets in my time and done loads with preventing rust and treating rust and this certainly looks like its going that way. Paint is starting to discolour around edge and in the right light you can see a bubble starting to appear!!!

They have 12 yrs anti corrosion warranty afaik - thats terrible

Fook me, not more bl00dy rust :( I thought I had seen the end of that when

I got shot of the MKI :(

Nope the MK II hatch does have a 12 year anti rust etc etc, however that's where the rust comes from the inside out.

Paint failure is only for the 3 years.

Really poor IMHO, they all do that and it shouldn't rust as it's galvanised is hardly a good reason.

:wrthless:

If I ever get home in the daylight I'll take some and put them up.

Looks like I made the right colour choice 'brown' at least it blends in.

It's a joke, really is.

Very poor for such a modern car.

sorry for bringing up an old thread , i had to take my car back to the dealer today as the repair that was carried out less than 6 months ago has started to crack again and has rusted slightly . I have since been to the bodyshop to show one of their technician's what as happened , and they are refusing to repair it now until skoda come up with a solution to stop it happening in future:confused:
