Misfire?

Featured Replies

hi guys and gals! hopefully someone can help, i have an '01 octavia 1.8t elegance with the AUM motor and basically it seems to have a small misfire/hesitation under slight acceleration especially when cold. it starts fine from cold but then sounds and feels like its running on 3 cylinders for a couple of seconds, then the revs will rise, drop down and it'll run rough again. it'll do this a few times then settle down, but if you try to drive off it'll have no power and will result in lots of kangarooing - not good. once it has settled down it'll drive fine, although once or twice it has done this when just randomly driving along. no engine lights come on when it does this, and there are no fault codes as a couple of weeks ago, one of the coil packs went, so took it to vw, put it on vag.com to find which one had gone and the only other fault code was for a faulty 'boost pressure relief valve' this was also replaced. this problem has been there since i bought the car 3 months ago. could it be something simple like worn spark plugs? or faulty maf sensor? sorry for going on but any advice would be greatly appreciated

First thought was secondary air pump leak, mine sounded like a spitfire for a couple of seconds when cold until i resealed the air pump, but yours does it when warm too by the sounds of it hmm?

yeah mine is really noisy when its cold, the couple of times it has done it when warm there is no noise just hesitation. where is the secondary air pump located? just so i can check it and either fix or eliminate it from the list! many thanks

Hi there. Had similar rough running on my 02 octavia vrs, mostly cold but sometimes when warm too - revs rising and spluttering, kangarooing etc. This completely disappeared when I cleaned out my throttle body (it's been covered a lot on here, but there's also a very handy how-to with pics here How to : Clean your throttle body - uk-mkivs). 5 min DIY job, no need to disconnect anything, all you need is some cloth, maybe a cotton wool bud or two and a can of carb cleaner (£5 from halfords). This may not fix it completely - you may well have the secondary air pump issue, mine's starting to go too - but worth a go and should help with general running anyway. Hope you get it sorted :)

EDIT: For info, here's the secondary air pump fix Step-by-step guide for repairing the Secondary Air Pump (with pictures) - uk-mkivs

cheers, just spent the last 2 hrs reading these! - very helpful indeed hopefully once these have been done my car will run like its supposed too! thanks again, i'll let you know if this cures it:thumbup:

when doing the throttle body clean dont disconnect the electric plug, if you do you will need VAG COM to do the reset. I found a toothbrush useful for loosening the thicker goo, a good trick to make sure you get all the muck out is a house brick on the pedal(most of these engines are drive by wire) you are unable to turn the butterfly like on a cable operated throttle or carburettor. also make sure you put a container of some sort under the throttle to catch the cr4p that comes out and make sure to use a new gasket when reasembling (£1.60ish from Skoda). HTH

IF you do the SAP fix you dont need to removeit completely, you can take the pipes off remove the nuts/bolts that hold it in place, loosen the braket and you can then drill out the lowest rivet and replace, rotate and repeat.

thanks for the info, got a new gasket today so will be doing it tomorrow hopefully. although this mornin it was worse than ever - the revs dropped right down to virtually nothin and it was poppin and spluttering but was fine after a minute or 2, then this evening, when leaving work, it was even worse - kept cutting out ,took a while to run properly and seemed down on power till it had properly warmed up, then it was fine so might not make it to work in the mornin! :thumbdwn:

Hi, Just out of interest just check your wiring that connects to the coil packs for splits

just an update, this mornin my car started fine with no problems! don't you just love intermittent problems! any way i cleaned the tb today and what a difference! its much smoother and nicer to drive, and it idles a lot smoother too, i totally reccomend this to anyone wether you have running problems or not, just don't unplug the tb and you won't need vag.com to reset it. i guess i'll have to wait and see if its cured the problem or not. hopefully do the airpump tomorrow too then i can look forward to my performance torque re-map!:D

You can visually inspect the air pump to see if any of the rivets have broken. The casing will have a slightly wider split where the rivet has broken. Mine had one broken rivet at the underside of the pump but cold start running was quite badly effected by this.

i was working on a 5-series beemer today (i work in a bodyshop) and had to replace the air pump for a new one as it had been damaged in the accident, so took the time and had a good look at the rivets ( air pump on beemer exactly the same pierburg unit as fitted to vag cars) i had a go at drilling one of the rivets out, and replacing it with a nut/bolt - very simple, so now know whats involved when i come to do mine! just out of interest, the new pump from bmw was £188 excl. vat did consider buying a new one but not at this price:eek:! cheers for the advice:thumbup:

My search brings up 17705 for that code.

I had the same problem for a couple of years and decided to just live with it and get rid of the car... HOWEVER!!!

I carried out the Secondary Air Pump fix - http://uk-mkivs.net/forums/p/141240/1411070.aspx

And below is what mended the idle misfire!!!

I would HIGHLY recommend cleaning the throttle body out using some carb cleaner and cotton buds. It's really easy and takes about 20 minutes.

http://briskoda.net/forums/topic/129943-cleaning-throttle-body-1-8t-engine

The schoolboy error I carried out the first time I cleaned it out was to clean it without opening the valve inside the throttle body. VERY IMPORTANT -> Don't force the valve open!! I had cleaned the enormous amounts of **** out from inside the body however left a ring of thick grime around the outside of the valve, which was only visible when opening the valve (see below)

1) make sure you have a new gasket

1) only remove the 4 bolts holding the throttle body on, leave everything else attached (you don't need to remove it completely or VAGCOM will be required to reset stuff and there's no need anyway)

1) you have to turn the ignition key to just before starting the engine; basically the engine should NOT be running but dash lights on

2) put a housebrick or another heavy item on the accelerator so it stays down; this opens the valve inside the throttle body

3) clean all the **** out of it; if you're car is as old as my 02 reg, it'll be full of it!

Since doing this my 02 VRS is like brand new and the idle misfire has gone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Also it's worth checking these pipes (link below), both of mine had errupted!

http://www.seatcupra.net/forums/showthread.php?p=2434169

Only using the above thread because it has a good diagram of where the pipes are. I installed Skoda pipes in mine; they're cack but they do the job

Holy thread revival batman :D
