Wheel Bearing?

Featured Replies

driving today and at around 80 got a sort of grinding wirring sound from car so pulled over to check everything and all looked ok so did a brake test to make sure nothign stick to disc and all was fine untill upto 80 again and then on the way back it was there but even lower this time at 70 and when i lifted off the accelerator it became very pronounced and lightened again when i accelerated gently.

and when manouvering around a car park you could here a grind grind grind sound as the car moved along.

so does this sound like a wheel bearing? i think it is but looking for some reasurance before i goto mechanic to get it fixed?

vwspares have febi wheel bearings for octavia for 22.75 or something like that and says for all models, is this right? or do i need specific one for the VRS?

TIA guys n gals

It could be bearing as the sounds and condition you have quoted is typical of a bearing problem. Bearings tend to go quieter under load and then when you come off the pedal the noise comes back. Best to get it checked with a Garage or Dealer to be certain if you are not confident. I paid around 16 quid for a front bearing from GSF car parts. The VRS shares the same wheel bearing a number or VW / SEAT variants.

Sounds almost exactly the same as my car the other week ... This was indeed a wheel bearing ... Do you have the relevant pullers and presses to put that bearing in ? I was shocked at the price the garage charged - £100 of labour on top of the bearing :( I'm going to get our works workshop to make me a tool so I can do the next one myself.

don't have the tools but I do have a friendly mobile mechanic who does most work like that on my car so ill be phoning him latter on to get a quote.

looks like its not going to be as cheap as I hoped though.

what are the chances of it been gearbox? as its when i left off?

cars done 45k and is an 2001

It mnight be worth jacking each corner in turn and spinning the wheel by hand, see if you can pick up any noises or roughness before booking it in. It's not likely to be as clear under the reduced pressure from being in the air but you never know :)

where doing that tomorrow when hopefully it wont be raining, just got crossed fingers its not gearbox!

Sounds just like mine a couple of months back and that turned out to be the wheel bearing

As above - I had the same a few months back - same sound etc you describe. Would defo agree with previous posts of it being a wheel bearing.

Cost me £140'ish I think from Independant VW garage.

Best way I could describe it was like being in an aircraft cabin with that low humming sound you get.

yup wheel bearing and he's fitting it this afternoon for me!

  • 2 weeks later...

what is the going price for this work?

Cheap if you can strip the Hub asm off the car and just get a garage to press the old bearing out and re fit new one (took me less than 40 minutes). Else you are looking at around £120 to £160 depending on where you take the vehicle.
