Vista system rating.. anyone actually use it?

Featured Replies

Hey guys.

Just wondered if anyone has actually ever used the system rating score for anything... apparantly its for software etc but i've not seen it used anywhere!

My memory seems to be holding me back... giving me 5.3 while everything else scores 5.9!

Dont really use it to be honest. Think its there for info to buy further software. I haven't seen it implemented anywhere either. Maybe Microsoft are working on it.

You must have a pretty quick system:

My lowest score is 4.8 for Memory (RAM) and thats my notebook having 4 gig installed.

Followed by 4.9 for processor which is a 2.2ghz intel core 2 duo santa rosa.

I've never really looked since i got rid of the desktop, i'm on a lappytop now so not going to be setting world on fire performance wise.

I don't know, although laptops will never be faster than desktops they are getting close with the performance they squeeze out of the components. I would think in the future the laptop, or notebook, would be found more in the private sector than the desktop.

Sorry.. lowest is 5.4 now for memory... just updated and it jumped up a point! lol

Its pretty quick... but then desktops always perform better than lappys really.

I too have 4gig (3.3 recognized in windows).

Yeh they must be "working on it" or is that fasing it out because they realise its useless! lol

Apparently you need the 64bit version of windows to fully recognise the RAM if its over 3GB or 3072MB

Yup! Well... 32bit will recognise up to 4gig of memory in total (this includes any graphics memory etc) so its 4gb minus the 768mb of graphics memory and thats how much ram i can use.

64bit has larger memory allocations etc so can use more ram at the same time as graphics memory.

Ah , it might recognise it but it cant use it. It (32bit version) can only use a maximum of 3072mb.

Surely you cant be running onboard graphics?

The computer and system info recognises that there is 4gb installed but windows only uses 3.3gb.

And no I'm not using on board graphics!

Basically the 32bit has a memory limit and this also includes any graphics memory etc which is why I am left with the 3.3gb memory after the 768mb of my 8800gtx is deducted!

P.s. just got it up to 5.5 after changing the memory timings as they were a bit sloppy before : 6-8-8-24 changed to : 5-4-4-15 (running at 2.2v which is the maximum allowed to not void warranty and 1042mhz)!

I am a bit baffled by all of that.

I have 4GB om memory installed and have a NVidea Graphics card with 256mb of its own memory. I would have thought that it would not have interfered with system RAM.

When i launch task manager the physical memory which windows can use is listed as 3072MB.

Maybe some machines are differnent. You learn everyday.

Good luck with that... 5.9 is the highest the vista rating goes.

Not really seen the scoring system used for anything useful. Apart from bragging rights ;)

Also, think it's daft that the score it reports is just the value of your lowest score, rather than an average score of all your components put together!

This ain't over yet ;);)

isn't it something to do with games?? i thought they had a minimum rating marked on the system requirements??

Dunno why my memory doesn't seem to want to play really... would have thought it would have scored better than that really!

Will run that benchmark later and see what I can rack up!

Push up the voltage on the memory.. i usually run mine at 2.2v..

Also make sure youve got the latest bios etc :D

Looks a bit limp that does fatty :P

My quad core, in standard config has the following vista ratings ,let down badly by the crap nvidia 8300GS graphics card)

Processor - 5.9

Memory - 5.6

Graphics - 3.4

Gaming Graphics - 4.3

Primary HD - 5.6

No I dont usually check mine.

My laptop has a 3.1 rating, again because of the onboard graphics.

My RAM is already running at 2.2v which is the max voltage before the warranty is voided lol!

Maybe its my mobo thats rubbish or the RAM or both!

5.6, with memory being the slow one, everything else is 5.9.

Will have to get to overclocking soon, as I have one of the "special" Q6600's :D

And what do you mean by "special"? Is that the old one or the G0 one?Phil
