W8 interior light mod - fitted Octavia mk1

Featured Replies

After reading several threads on the W8 light mode (cat vision), I decided to have a go. I ordered the interior light from VW Speed - W8 Interior light in Grey

The switches light up red and the unit is brighter, purely because it uses 2 wedge bulbs instead of the standard single festoon bulb.

I didn't have time to buy the correct plug (3B0 972 706), so I used small thin terminal connectors with additional heatshrink.

There are 3 existing wires which I cut and joined to the wires I made up connected to the new light.

  • Red/Black wire goes to position 5.
  • Brown wire goes to position 4.
  • Grey/Blue wire goes to position 3.
  • The new wire goes to position 1

I then ran the wire for position 1 along the top of the windscreen and down the A pillar (the trim just clicks off). I popped open the lightswitch on the dash and located the grey/blue wire on the dimmer. I tapped into this wire.

Everything worked fine first time so I tidied up the cabling with harness tape and put everything back together.

On the existing interior light the plug is at the top, whereas on the W8 version it is flat. This is not a problem as there is space in the lining to accommodate it.

Also the new unit is numbered 1 and 6 for the connections.

Did this on my Mk 1 Fab VRS - a nice little mod to do, and certainly adds to night time driving!

any pics?? this is white the one in my octy is black

Been thinking about doing this myself. I know its hard to photograph but a pic showing the overall effect would be good.

Sorry I haven't got any pictures of it. Mine was white when I got it but painted it a mat black before fitting.

It worked well and certainly added to the interior of the car.

Maybe worth doing a quick search as there used to be a few pictures knocking around.

Edit: Here you go guys, have a look at this

That's known as Onyx, might be worth speaking to VW Speed in case they can get one.

Is there any reason why this would not fit into my Octy with a sunroof?

Maybe if there is enough interest we could sort out a group buy?

I believe its available with the sunroof controller on?

Or is the control for the sunroof in a different place.

Can anyone supply the dimentions... Might see about a bit of fettling to get it in Nelly!

Phil

Not sure on the depth of the W8 unit as I don't have one to measure, but I would estimate it to be somewhere around 40-50mm

The sizes in the diagram are of the actuall unit, NOT the size of the whole required which is slightly smaller.

*EDIT - Just found one in my box of bits and the depth required to fit one would be around 39mm

Ambient lighting, so you get an eerie red glow on the centre console at night.

does anyone have a pic of one with the sunroof controls? and would the vw one fit all the same

So are these red LED's perm. on when the headlights are on or can they be switched on/off as reqd???

Also how did people go about painting it black with regard the symbols that light up??? I must admit i'm pretty tempted but think the red symbols would look out of place with the rest of the green dashboard symbols.

Cheers

Dave.

Mines are connected via the dimmer, so they can be dimmed at the same time as the dash. I am thinking of changing the electric window switches to red. Does anyone know what VAG model had these in red?

I think you can get the W8 light with green lights which might be from an Octy mk2 or lower range Passat.

They just come on when the lights are switched on.

To be honest I can'r remember how I over came the red symbols thing when I painted mine (I did this back in 2005) - all I do know is it dosen't look out of place and is a classy little interior mod.

Hmmmmmm if i could get one with green lighting i think i'd go for it...... Just not happy with the red symbols etc.... Think i'll pop up a new thread to see if someone knows of a part number etc.

Ok time for a walk over to the superb forum to check which models it's from.

My uncle's 55 plate Elegance has it. Not sure if its standard on 'lesser' models.

they do with and without sunroof versions, with sunroof costs more however (not sure on price)
