Intermittent air con problem

Featured Replies

Fabia SDI

The dashboard switch "AC" lights up when it is pushed (subject to the fan switch being in any postion other than "off").

With the engine running, this used to start the air con - the air coming through the dashboard vents would get colder

However, for the past few weeks the air coming through the dashboard vents has not been getting any colder

My usual (non main dealer) garage and an auto electrician have checked the car but they have not found a fault other than "no electrical feed to the compressor".

This morning, I pushed the "AC" button and the air through the vents did get colder!

I called into my usual garage on my way to work and they checked the pipes under the bonnet which were very cold and also used a digital thermometer inside the car. They said it was working properly

At lunchtime, I started the engine but it wasn't working again!

I would appreciate any advice offered.

thanks

Martyn

It worked on Friday morning, stopped til Monday and worked again!!!!!

The fault appears to be electrical and not mechanical and may be a broken wire........but finding it could be a long ie expensive job according to my garage.

My garage has recommended taking it to the main dealer and letting them run the "diagnostics software".

The main dealer has said that this will only be of use at the time the air con is not working and so I havn't yet booked it in. The diagnostic would be free but that they would then need to investigate further (at

Find someone with VAG-COM and a cable to diagnose it for you :) If you're in the Andover/South Hants area I have one and used it to diagnose my faulty air con which had similar symptoms to yours - nmine turned out to be the evaporator temperature sensor which is about 40 quid to replace plus the labour to remove and replace the dash. Unfortunately my car was not under warranty :(

Chris

Oh, and all faults with the system are logged so there should be a record of it not working, or it will be marked as "sporadic" :)

Hi Chris

Thanks for the info and offer of help. If I lived nearer, I would buy you a beer or three while you helped me with the diagnostic. I live in Lancashire so a bit too far to travel

It may be a coincidence, but the only time the air con seems to work is when the outside temperature (as per the dashboard display) shows less than 20c although it doesn't always work even in those conditions.

When it next doesn't work (probably tonight), I will have to book it into the main dealer for the "free" diagnostic

I will keep you posted of any developments/solutions

Sounds exactly like mine, although I found it became more sporadic afterwards and I couldn't really tie it down :)

It will record an error, even if it's not working and will be logged as "sporadic" on their diagnostic equipment and well worth getting a printed copy of the output so you can run it passed the people on here before allowing them to "diagnose" the problem themselves ;)

What age is the car as mine packed up on my 3 year old and 6 month car - d'oh! ;)

Hi Chris

Sounds like good advice - thanks for that.

The car is three years and two months old so out of warranty

The main dealer checked the car yesterday with the diagnostic software and have told me that the "evaporator temperature sensor" is faulty.

They can fix (replace?) it for

Blimey! That is dirt cheap, and I'd double check that. My dealer quoted me about 80 quid the first time I rang tem and then ~180 quid labour to do it plus about 60 quid for the part when I turned up and they realised how difficult the sensor is to get to ;)

If that is the right price, I'm very jealous :D

Chris

And that sensor is a very common problem.

I believe you can just get to it without removing the dash, but its a bit of a knuckle grazer.

The main dealer has fitted a new evaporator sensor this morning at
