What et on wheels

Featured Replies

what et should i have on a set of 18 alloys on a octy 1 vrs any help welcome ?

Standard wheels are 38 offset.

Most 18" wheels will come in a standard offset of 35mm or 40mm but i would go for the 35mm.

I though going lower offset was a bad idea?

Going lower is usually better as it pushes the wheel out towards the arch more.

Lower et you may require spacers as it could be hit the struts.

Lower the ET the more towards the arch they are.

So I'm looking at some wheels at the moment that have a 40mm offset. They're 17x7 wheels. And I was thinking of going from my 205/50/16 tyres to 225/40/14s

Am I likely to have any problems?

Will the tracking need re-doing?

Here try this for size.

I would say you will need to check how much clearance you have now, just to make sure you will be ok without the need for a small spacer.

Rob come on till us how your going to fit a 14" tyre on a 17" rim?

Check your tyres as i would have thought they are 205/55 16 and if so 225/45 17 is the size you want.

would get the tracking checked since your putting new tyres on but you don't have to as your only changing the wheels not the suspension.

225/40/14s

You might have one or two issues :P

Okay so I mis-remembered the sizes. Must check these things :D And don't you think 14s will stretch?

14s will fit if you cut a few inches from the sidewall, but then you will need a higher profile tyre to compensate.;)

So...

Going from 205 width with 38 offset to 225 with 40 offset:

The edge of the new tyre will be 12mm closer to the inside of the wheel well and suspension components, and 8mm further out from the edge of the bodywork.

And going from 205/55/16 to 225/45/17 :D

Means:

Difference in circumference: 7.54mm or 0.38%

Pretty close :D

And that is a damn good article!

Lovely thought but bear in mind that 1 tyre manufacturer will be different to the next. I've noticed over the years that they can differ wildly even though they are supposed to be the same size.

For e.g. I had 8.5 x 18s on an escort cossie some years ago with PZeros on. When they wore out I changed to Goodyear F1 GSD2s in the same size and they rubbed the front struts on the bottom spring cups.

i used et35 rims with my 18s and 20s , had no probs even lowered.

225 tyres on both:orb_cool:

Going for 9x18 on mine with et 25 front and et20 on the rear lol.

Sweet Jesus! That's gonna be fat!

Those tyres must be pricey.

Not realy as i can go for the normal 225/40/18 or 215/40/18 but i want the stretched look.

yeah I guess the 225/40's will work on a 9" rim

love the stretched euro look myself.

deep dished low offset wheels look the nuts.

Look forward to seeing some pics when it's done

On my mk3 golf VR6 i was running Borbet 16x9 with a 195/45/16 tyre so no problem getting the 215 on a 9" wide wheel.

Oh right, so you clearly know what your doing then!

I never knew tyres would stretch out that much to the rim. Assumed you would get sealing issues with the tyre, but clearly not! Good to know.

Is it just a case of try it and see?

Different tyre makes comes into play as well.

Toyo are one of the best for stretching. Most tyre fitters will not do it or if they do then they may ask you to sign a disclaimer as not fitted to manufacturers specs.
