Diesel driving technique

Featured Replies

From this thread http://www.briskoda.net/forums/showthread.php?t=13015

On the forums during the last few days someone suggested that the Furby Vrs should be driven with the revs generally hovering around the 2k rpm (where peak torque is produced) mark... rather than changing gear and letting the revs drop as low as possible with letting them get so low that the engine becomes bogged down.

Being a generally econimical sort of driver, when not dashing around I change gear to keep the revs down, but following reading the forum I decided to give the 2k rpm thing a go.

Started using this technique on Friday, OK so they engine is revving a little higher than it would be normally, but the trip computer is showing better fuel consumption, having got used to having a 6th gear, I now find that I am using 4th and 5th more than 6th.

I filled up on Friday morning to see what I would get out of a full (not rimmed) tank of fuel... Up to Saturday evening I've done 411miles and the trip computer is saying I have enough fuel left for another 100 miles. If this is correct I am on target to get approx. 70 miles more than normal out of this tank of fuel.

I've done 75% open A road and motorway driving since Friday morning and 25% country lane blasting, including a rather nice dice with a red X reg Golf V6 in Derbyshire today; shame I didnt know the road (or rather the camera situation) I pressed on for a while but didnt want to risk a photograph so let him go, think he was quiet please to get away from my diesel fumes ;)

good to hear this! i am getting my new broom broom in 2 weeks - and it was me asking how to break the car in - so im taking all this advice in

Dave, I've found that a steady 50mph in 4th can produce better eceonomy figures than in 5th. So your/somebody else's theory about the torque band seems to have some credence.

Have to agree mine delivers its best figures withe the rpm around 2500-2700 (pd100 5spd) see a big drop on the trip computer if outside of 2300-3000rpm....... Matches well with dyno ploy for torque.

Best economy is normally in fifth gear at around 70. At 60 in that gear the car tends to need a little more encouragement which can slightly hamper economy. I'll have to give this other technique a crack, but normally I don't notice any differences in economy however I drive it. Its normally around a 460/470 mile range from "first click" full to running out.
