LCD Leakage? Being fobbed off!?

Featured Replies

Hey there guys and gals.Need some help!My new tablet has developed a fault with the screen. There is, what appears to be, liquid inside the centre of the screen. There is absolutely no damage to the surface of the screen or the actual LCD inside (no cracks marks and the touch screen works fine!)I have spoken to technical support at the company it was purchased from and he said that is has being most likely caused by pressure on the screen and was trying to tell me that I must have trapped a pen in the keyboard or something while closing the lid! I have done no such thing and seeing as though the thing cost over 1k which has come from my ever shrinking work budget I have done nothing but treat it with care! These exact same laptop tablet things are used at the college and they aren't exactly handled with care all the time and they are fine! They are coming to collect it tomorrow and will inspect it to see if it is a fault or accidental damage. Obviously I will have to pay if they think it is accidental damage which I don't think I should!I though that LCD screens didn't actually contain any liquid?!Any help much appreciated!Phil

P.s. sorry for having no new lines etc... they don''t work on my work pc!!

I am not a lawyer, however ....

Within the first 6 months of sale it is up to the selling company to prove the fault was not there when you purchased it.

Speak to the local Trading Standards if you don't get any luck.

The law you need is the "sales of goods act 1979 (as amended)" and I'd point them at this stating it is their obligation to prove their claim that you have caused the problem and it was not an inherent problem under this.

Eg if they think that on the balance of probability you did it that doesn't wash, unless they can 100% prove you did it they have to presume the fault was there at time of sale.

If you bought it online you have 14 days cooling off period where they have to refund you as if the transaction never took place. (eg full refund inc postage)

If they play silly buggers then send them a letter telling them you are rejecting it under the distance selling act and send it special delivery. Ask for an RMA and send it back.

Any problems and I hope you put it on a credit not debit card.

Well it occured a few days after receiving it. What is very strange is that gradually over the course of the day the area of "liquid" as shrunk significantly. Was about 3 inches in diameter and no 1 inch!

Will still get them to take it tommorrow and have a look becuase I'm not happy that it has happened.

Btw... I havn't personally purchased it. It was purchased through a local government account... and we havn't actually paid the bill yet anyway! lol

This morning the "blob" had reduced even further in size down to around 1cm diameter. Laptop has gone off anyway as not happy that it has happened.

Spoke to the company this morning and they couldn't stress enough how it was an accidental damage claim and whenever I suggested it was a fault he said they'll see when they get it in!

I thought LCDs did have liquid in as thats why they are called Liquid Crystal Displays

I think it referres to the crystals being in a state of neither liquid or solid but they're not actually a liquid that can leak out and run etc.

I could, of course, be wrong though!

The crystal is pulled tight or loose depending on if current is applied to it and as such either blocks the light behind it or doesn't.
