Octavia II possible recirc problem?

Featured Replies

My 54 plate Octavia II steams up a lot and it's a real pain in the cold weather when the air-con can't be used to clear it. The car generally clears with a window slightly open but that's noisy and cold!

The car seems to steam up on dry days and wet days and I can normally drive 15-20 miles before it starts.

The car was stripped by the dealer looking for leaks (about a year ago) and they found nothing.

Noticed today that, with a passenger, the car seems to steam up more quickly so wondered if it could be a recirc problem. The light on the recirc button lights up when it's pressed, but I don't notice any difference in the blower noise. Is there any easy way to check if the flap is stuck or is this a 'go back to the dealer and get my wallet out'?

Thanks for any help.

Iain

I would suggest that you change the pollen filter (dead easy - plenty of"how to" info on the forum). Cured the problem on my '54 Octy II for not much cost.

Hi catzi

Yes Pollen Filter sorted mine, also a 54 plate as drefaldwyn says do a search in the Octavia II Forum for Pollen Filter and there is loads of info on how to fit one. Another tip when you have fitted your Pollen Filter give your windows a dammed good clean inside..

Hello again,

Go a new pollen filter from the dealer but noticed that the old one had a foam gasket round the outside. The new one doesn't have the gasket.

I pointed this out to the parts guy and he looked up the code from the old filter and told me that part was no longer available but it had been replaced with the new one (gasket-less).

Now the car is still steaming up and I am not sure if I have the right pollen filter or not. Honestly, I go to the dealer because they are supposed to know what's what!!

FYI the old part number (with gasket) is - 1K2 819 653 A

The new part number (without gasket) is - 1K2 819 653 B

Anybody got any advice??

Sorry i dont have any advice regarding your problem, but knowing if the parts supplied for catzi are the correct ones would be good.

As im expecting to recieve my series resistor tomorrow and while the glovebox is out, i will be looking into replacing the pollen filter.

Hi, people correct me if im wrong here.

But when you select reverse the air ven should goto recirc so it dont suck in exhaust fumes, hence you should hear it close.....turn the radio down you should hear it, this could rule the motor out.

Mine steams up a bit when its cold/raining and i know the aircon pump will not work below 3 deg cel

Mine does this :(

All the windows are generally steamed up when I come back to the car after work. It clears very slowly with the blower on max, but often steams up again after a few miles if I don't keep the blower directed at the windscreen on at least number 2. It clears quicker with the AC on, but this is ineffective below a certain temperature (? 3 oC).

I'm pretty sure my recirc flap is working as I can hear the tone of the airflow change when I put the car into reverse or press the recirc button. All the carpets are bone dry and I can find no evidence of any leaks. I presume the pollen filter is clean as the car is only 8 months old and has covered less than 9K miles. I've tried keeping the windows meticulously clean, but this does not appear to help.

I am finding this a major frustration as I often have to wait a good few minutes before setting off.

Any suggestion gratefully received.

All the windows are generally steamed up when I come back to the car after work.

This suggest to me some source of moisture somewhere inside. Here are some random thoughts:

A leak somewhere that isn't making its way down to the carpets ?

Have you looked under the spare wheel ?

Does your rear washer squirt properly (the line can come off and squirt the screen fluid inside the bodywork) ?

Do you often open the hatch when it is wet (water can spill off it into the boot) ?

Do you have a sunroof (they sometimes leak or the drains get blocked or dislodged) ?

Do you frequently carry wet things (dogs, water sports gear etc) ?

Condensation from air con not being dripped outside of car ?

Door interior not sealed off properly from interior of car (have you ever had any work on window winders, door locks, speakers, window tinting etc) ?

If you garage your car in a dry garage, try leaving the windows down inside the garage.

That's about it from me for ideas at the moment. If you do find the problem (and then hopefully a solution), please let us know and thereby add to the collective wisdom here.

To demist the car the air conditioning SHOULD be used. It is not ineffective at any temperature, as it uses the temperature you set on the heating control. Do not be led into believing that Air-con is for colling the air, while it is the only way to do this it does nto have to! It is extremely effective at dehumidifying and the only way to properly demist is with it ON. Indeed, if you have climatronic or dual zone, pressing the demister (windscreen only) automatically switches on the air-con. Mine steams up if you leave it in econ, but is perfectly clear, no matter the ambient temperature, when in Auto

I've even found that a wet or moist cleaning cloth carried in the car is enough to generate condensation at this time of the year.
