Help, Gearbox problems. . .

Featured Replies

Well at least i think its the gear box. When the car is cold and first started in the morning, and ticking over in neutral, their is a rhythmic clunking coming from the engine bay. When i put my foot on the clutch it stops, and when in gear with the clutch up i cant hear it. Has anyone experienced this before, and if so what was the problem. Also worth mentioning the problem only started after the car had been chipped for a few months, is it possible somthing hasn't coped well with the extra torque? or could it just be low on fluid?

Eagerly awaiting your input. . .

Mike.

Check your fluid.

it sounds like it might also be your release bearing.

I had a few problems with my gearbox just after i got it, then after i got it mapped.

The gearbox was stripped down twice under warranty.

1st time they replaced two bearings.

They blamed that on the fluid being too low, doubt it though.

Second time 4th and 6th gear were smashed to bits.

Probably because they hadnt put it back together properly.

Then they blamed it on me having my car re-mapped.

They were just looking for excuses.

Luckely i didnt have to pay for the repairs though.

Do you have a dual mass flywheel? because they can make a noise similar to your description.

No cars totally standard, Cars due its 20k service so will get fluids changed and see if it helps, if not will get it straight back. . . cheers

Definately your Dual Mass Flywheel..weak points on the vRS

its gona cost you

Uprate to a performance clutch that uses the Single Mass Flywheel and it wont happen again...

Helix clutch and SMF from Mardi Gras Motorsport will cost you £830 all in delivered to your door. ontop of this you should fit a new release bearing...

Merry Christmas :P

Was it a cheap remap by any chance and have you been naughty and been using the low down torque

Exactly why I went for a custom map at Jabba Sport them boys know what they're doing everybody else is just a cowboy to me.

My normal TDI has a noise from the gearbox/clutch when in neutral with my foot off the clutch pedal. The noise goes when I press the clutch pedal to the floor. I think the noise is also there when moving off in first gear.

I did a bit of research online a while back and I felt it was probably a bearing in the gearbox (main bearing? release bearing?). I ruled out anything to do with the clutch. My car is well out of warranty and I have done 20k miles with it like this - I suspect it won't ever cause any problem other than a bit of extra noise but I did buy a spare box from devonutopia so may get it investigated when my clutch eventually goes.

If your car is under warranty let them investigate it - problem is it might take them several attempts to find the cause and fix it - especially if it's going to involve work for them.

My money is on a DMF, could be a bearing on the first motion shaft though, better get it looked at.

Mine is from Dastek, but did floor it a few times under 2000rpm and felt the clutch slip. . .

Sounds like excessive movement between the two parts of the Dual Mass Flywheel. Might not be covered by warranty depending on dealer. So have a few quid ready as they are not cheap. If you are staying mapped, SMF with uprated clutch is a must IMHO.

My octavia 1.9tdi has a sort of clunking noise to it on idle, but my clutch and dual mass flywheel was replaced under 20k since. Also notice it while shifting gears.

Only very quiet though.
