Mk1 vrs octavia irratic revs

Featured Replies

i have a strange problem with my mk1 octavia vrs, when cruising along in 4th or 5th on motorway and i put foot down to overtake a car, the revs start to build up then hang at 2k then a couple of seconds later its shoots up to about 4k then drops off again then will accelerate normally, at first i thought it might be the turbo acuator but in lower gears it seems fine

any ideas as im lost

Do you have a split pipe opening up under the demand of pulling with higher gearing?

will have to have a good look tomorrow but i didnt see anything obvious earlier

Have a look at the two pipes under the inlet manifold.

And actually look at them properly, particularly underneath them. Also, if there are any pipes with external fabric re-enforcement, give them a good squeeze; it's not unknown for them to collapse internally under load.

could it be possible the clutch is slipping under the larger pressure when trying to accelerate in higher gears ?

I suppose it's possible - you should be able to simulate it by dropping it into 5th at around 10-15mph, putting your foot down for a second and seeing if it judders or spins up. I would have thought that if it'd slip in the higher gears it'd be just as likely to slip in any gear as the torque crosses the threshold that the worn plate can handle. I had an old MK2 golf that was almost down to the rivets and that would start to spin up at anything over 3k in any gear.
