Tyres - mix and match?

Featured Replies

Just got the Furby back today from the insurance repairers. They've been jolly nice and put F1 GSD3's on the two replacement wheels. I was half expecting Wanli Ditchfinders.

This leaves me with

2x Goodyear F1 GSD3 on the drivers side (brand new)

1x Goodyear F1 GSD2 on the front passenger (about 2k on it)

1x Bridgestone ER300 on the rear passenger (puncture replacement - about 10k on it, loads of tread)

1x Factory Bridgestone on the spare wheel (ER30?)

I'm not too keen on having different tyres on each corner/axle. I'm open to suggestions/opinions.

Couple of options I've thought of:

1. Buy 2x GSD3s to complete the set. Sell/store the others.

2. Buy 1x GSD3 to replace the Bridgestone. Swap to the front and put the GSD2 on the back.

3. Swap GSD3s to the front wheels. Swap the GSD2 with the spare so I'm back to F1s on the front and Bridgestones on the back.

Let the tyre arguments commence!

I'd put the GSD3s on the front. Can you get a new GSD2 and put a pair of those on the back?

There is an argument, that the grippiest tyres should go on the back, because apparantly if the back loses grip its a lot harder to control (unless you know what you're doing) than the front losing grip.

Someone may back me on this.

PERSONALLY, I've always put grippiest/ meatiest on the front?

I prefer to have the grippiest tyres on the front of my car :) Just prefer the handling characteristics.

Before the incident I had GSD2's on the front and an ER300/ER30 on the back so at least each end was matched up.

Having been out for a test run tonigth it's a bit squirmy in the cold/wet.

Either that or I've forgotten how to drive it after three weeks. The vRS feels very fast after the hire car I had and I significantly broke the speed limit without trying on a couple of occaisions.

I might have a word with the tyre place round the corner tomorrow. I got a stonking deal on the GSD2s, and hopefully he might have one left.

My cars current got

Michelin Primacy - front left

Infinity ??? - Front right

Michelin energy - Rear Left

Dunlop p9000 - Rear Right

Unsed Dunlop sport 14" spare

I got them as part worns to get me through an MOT, but to be honest the car handles perfectly fine in all conditions so I'm not bothering to change.

I'm in the 'best tyres on the back axle' camp. So I'd fit your GSD3s to the rear, and the other two to the front.

Steve

If you're that bothered about having difff tyres on each corner then go and change them.

IMO you'll be better off putting the 2 oldest tyres on the front to wear them out before replacement.

I have 2xFulda EcoControls on the rear and 1 CEAT and 1 Sava tyre on the front of mine and I haven't noticed any difference. I know how my car handles in all conditions.

Or how it did before the head gasket killed it off.

We had quite a bit of snow and the budget tyres on my sisters car performed admirably and the car never got stuck.. Was originally running 2xPirellis and 2x budgets but 3 (both pirellis and 1 budget) needed replacing.

But it's your car and your money. A set of Goodyears prob cost as much as a decent Felicia 1.6!!!

Sorry to semi-hijack your thread.

Does anyone rotate their wheels? (I know they rotate when you drive  ) I mean do you every few thousand mile swap the front to back so the tyres all wear evenly, then replace the full set?

I thgink the current flavour of the month is not to rotate tyres anymore as the fronts and rears have different wear characteristics or somesuch.

@the OP - if the car has ESP rather than ASR then apparently fitting different tyres on opposite sides of the same axle and even front and rear can cause 'interesting' functionality (I read one case of an early Audi TT applying the brakes randomly because it thought one wheel was slipping).

I don't usually rotate the tyres. For one it's a pain with directional tyres like the F1s. I tend to find the rears last for two sets of fronts on previous FWD VWs I've had. I got 17k from the factory Bridgestone's and then got the GSD2s to replace them. Then the careful planning went out the window!

No ESP on mine, just ASR. Have noticed today the GSD2 loses traction before the GSD3, which triggers the ASR.
