Handling vs Power

Featured Replies

I guess you have to have a balance between the two. All0out power and no brakes will end in tears :D

NZ has a 100kph speed limit and some very hilly, twisty and narrow roads so all of my recent mods and most of my planned ones (don't tell SWMBO) are handling related.

Or cosmetic but I do seem to be a bit of tart :D

Andypandy - are you seriously suggesting that someone who doesn't normally drive fast in the twisties (or flat-out on a german autobahn) needs a brake upgrade ? The std brakes are surely more than adequate for "normal" usage (and have sufficient power to lock up the wheels). You would only need more fade resisitance if you use your brakes pretty hard.

nope, all I'm saying is that if you increase power it's easier to reach greater speeds than you might realise (particularly with a turbo car where you're not actually putting any extra "effort" in) and stopping the same car from a greater speed requires greater breaking effort - does making a car go quicker without making it also stop quicker not seem daft to you?

I agree with Rob, you need a balance between power and handling/braking

:)

Yes yo do ...........:P

Just to settle this then - handling AND power. :D

OK, seeing as everyone has studiously ignored the main thrust of my original theory I'll stop stirring now (but it has been fun ) :)

Most of you obviously regularly go around corners near the limit without any risk, need to repeatedly brake very hard at the last minute and also have driving skills that far surpass the Stig's, so you are all perfectly safe.

Live long and prosper.

I couldnt agree more!! :D

Just to add to this, handling every day.

I had the joy of driving a new mini last night and even though it's only the low powered version, it was absolutely destroying various cars including a fabia VRS off the roundabouts and through the twisties.

Sure on the straight lines there was no way I was going to keep up, but there was no way either of them could keep up on the back roads.

For pure fun a car that you can have a play with, but know will get around the corner and will stop quick when you stand on the brakes is much more fun than a barge with a big turbo.

It's the old argument people used to use against the US cars.

Big power but forget taking a corner.
