Given the advice of VW in the link above, how many of you think you are actually on the most suitable service plan for your car?

Not sure which is which - I live in France - but mine is on long life, every 30,000Km. Need to get it done, too... :( As I'm outside the network, in any case, I'm not stuck with anybody's imposed plan.

My 73 yr old father bought a new Octavia 2.0 Tdi Elegance just over a year ago. I advised him to get annual servicing as he only will do about 6000m a year and the car will only be out once or twice a week often never getting fully warmed up. The suppling dealer was adamant that he should remain on variable servicing and of course I could not persuade him otherwise. This is services he will have to pay for as there was no free service offer on at the time so that should not have influenced the dealer's advice.

Was he given bad advice by the dealer(Deans of Dumfries) or am I incorrect?

I do more miles but in a similar fashion, mostly driving it at the weekend. I guess I do about 8-12k a year. I'm also on variable although it should have been on fixed from new to match the free servicing deal

I am on variable - 2006 Octavia 1.9pd - However I do my own oil change in between at 9k miles. Partly because 18 to 20k between changes just seems to much, but also to try and preserve my turbo. I've got a mate whose a vw technician and he replaces a lot of turbos.

I think the failure rate of the turbos on these engines proves variable doesn't work for them. OK for a fleet vehicle getting replaced after 3years, but I intend to keep mine several years and want it to do 100k + miles without to much bother.

Except that I won't bother with this myself, as mine is a Company Car on a 3 year/60,000 miles free servicing package.

I drive for work (field based) and am doing about 20k a year ish

So variable works out, as its mostly motorways but a bit of city

I think this variable would be ok if you can DIY the oil and filter as this seems to be the main problem, fresh oil. On my old Honda's I use to do the oil ever 6 months my self no problem.

How would get to drain the oil on my Skoda? Ware's the sump plug etc. Mybe some in the know could do and quick guide with a few photos. Thinking for next year and all, don't think a Hynes book is going to be along any time soon:(

If I were to do this, I think I'd rather that I kept the extra oil/filter change "hidden", incase Skoda tried to wriggle out of a warranty claim because I couldn't prove I used the correct oil etc.

While under warranty, perhaps it might be prudent to change the oil but leave the filter in place? Surely this would be much harder to detect?

A few points in response to this:

1) Use a genuine filter

2) The genuine one I purchased was manufactured purflux so you could use one of those.

3) If you see a dirty one you'll realise if you use one from VW/purflux they probably couldn't tell the difference with it being covered in oil.
