Ford IDS diagnostic needed in Kent

Featured Replies

Pretty much as the title says, I'm after an independent who is in Kent, ideally Nr. Folkestone who is not going to charge nearly £100 ! (cheers Ford :finger:) to give a 2004 Fiesta a diagnostic check, to pinpoint the cause of an annoying fault with SWMBO's car.

TIA

It's an intermittent starting problem, sometimes it turns over normally until if fires other times it will only turn over about 2 revolutions then it just stops - as if you have let go of the key. This can go on for a dozen or so times, or start the next time, it also makes no difference whether it is starting from cold or warm / hot.

I'm thinking along the lines of starter solenoid / ignition barrel / ECU.

The starter is a tw@ to get to (back of engine by the bulkhead) otherwise that would of been off by now and checked over, there are no other ignition related issues, once started it never cuts out by itself etc, as for the ECU I'm trying not to think about that one.

I plugged my VCDS in on the off chance and you can pull certain info up, like RPM, temp etc but it wont scan for faults.

(FWIW it's a 1.4 TDCi)

iirc the engine management will stop the starter motor from cranking if it picks up a fault on the cam or crank sensor, i.e. out of sync with each other , like the cam belt has snapped , so either of those could be faulty, or the cam belt tensioner has failed and allowing the belt to run slack

if you are in the AA or RAC , get them out when its in a none start situaton , they will read the codes for free

Good thinking i never thought of that!

It will have to be from her work as she hasn't got home start.

There's a very good Ford 'expert' named Radnorman on the What Diesel forum here: What Diesel Car | The Forum who I'm sure would be able to help.
