Octy II - front door card removal and speaker upgrade

Featured Replies

OK, decided to keep my Octy II VRS rather than change it for a VAT free MY08 model on current Skoda UK deal, gonna hang on for the facelift VRS later in MY09.

So, have small rattle in nearside front door when "pushing" the stereo which is either the speaker needs replacing or something is loose in there.

Questions :-

1) how easy is the door card to remove to investigate, any diagrams, tools, tips?

2) Is there an aftermarket speaker set out there which will drop into the doors with out the need for major surgery?

Thanks in advance.

Thanks was going to ask the same question.

Check out GAFF's video as well. I bet this is your rattling problem: Video of Door rattle - Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Getting the door cards off isn't very difficult but you will almost certainly break some clips, so order some replacements first (I'm just about to collect some myself tonight, so I'll post the part number later).

While you're at it, how about lining your doors/door cards with some dynamat or similar? I've just done mine and the difference is incredible. You probably already read that the OEM speakers are riveted in place, so you'll have to drill them out.

Out of interest, do you have the MP3 Stream head unit? I ask because I'm always amazed when people talk about going to all this effort to upgrade it (drilling rivets out etc..) when, in my opinion, the standard kit is very, very good (after you've fixed the rattles!). I'm aware that the older Stream units were significantly worse though...

Next job im doing on the car this coming weekend is to get the door panels off and giving them a layer of dynamat xtreme. :) I was also wondering about throwing a decent set of speakers in there but having given it some thought Im pretty happy with the OE speakers running from the columbus.

Where's the best place to put the matting btw? On the inside of the outside door skin? Somewhere else?

Usually most effect from a layer on the outer skin behind the speaker and a layer around the speaker and between the speaker and door where mounting.

But being riveted is it worth drilling them out and screwing them back in (with the added dynomat between them) Im wondering?!

Be careful drilling the rivets out if you intend to screw back in. Looking very closely at mine I could see hairline cracks in the plastic where they're riveted. Might be nothing, but I didn't want to find all the mounting holes falling apart if I opened it right up.

cheezemonki is right in that the "normal" thing is on the outer/inner door skin but I'm a bit wary of putting dynamat all over the inner metal since it can be a right PITA to get off if you/someone ever need to get inside the door skin for window lifter problems or something.

Instead I''ve just given the insides of the door cards a thorough coating of the stuff and it's still made quite a difference. Don't forget it's not soundproofing - it just adds mass to reduce vibration, which it does very effectively. I've also filled the "voids" in the door cards with blocks of foam.

The result is of all this is far less vibration with much cleaner bass notes. It also has the side effect that my heavier doors now clunk like an Audi A8 :)

Door clip part number: 5JO 867 276

Turns out they've changed the design for much less brittle plastic and an integral rubber washer - much better than the old ones and look like they'd withstand more than one use!

Thanks for all the advice, yes, its a Stream MP3 headunit which I am quite happy with. Looks like I'll forget the speaker upgrade based on replies here. Its due a service soon, so will get the dealer to sort out the rattle under warranty I reckon, especially if there are pesky clips to break while removing the door card.
