Dodgy Tyres. Kumho Tyres

Featured Replies

Hi All.

Well, the story goes like this...

I kept going back to my car after it had been parked for the day at work and my tyre was low, so pumped it up. After the second day I decided to nip to QuickFit, and see if I had a nait and get it plugged.

Well, theres no chance the fitter could have plugged this!!

The tyre was ripped about 55% of the way round the inside edge!!

They wanted £188 a tyre, so I said not to worry about it.

I lipmed back to the place I got my bushes done (Neil Garner Racing, Neil Garner Performance Engineering | Home ), and he and his 2 mechanics dropped everything to check the toe in/out and camber which where all ok.

We looked at the tyre abit closer and realised what was happening.

The tyre at first looked like it has been scuffing on the inside, which would mean too much toe out, but my wheels where toe in a little!

What has happened to the tyre is that the tyre is de-laminating (the tread is ripping off the tyre wall). I will try and get pics.

Neil couldnt believe the tyre, but really helped by explaining what has been happening.

He said you can tell its de-laminating 'cos the sholder of the tyre is NOT warn, and if you look accross the tyre (from the front if on a car), you could see the tread was lifting away.

Not sure if im alowed to say this but theyre Kumho tyres, who I have emailed, but no reply yet. So ill keep you updated.

Ive just got Pirelli P6000 for £162 fitted at Bathwick Tyres, and they are so much better. Not much road noise atall compared to the P-Zero Nero's I was running on the 16" alloys.

Dave

not good at all, just out of interest which model of tyre and what size? It could be a dodgy batch

Oh dear. I'd be on the phone to them as well. It can and does happen and as Matt says, faulty manufacture is a possibility.

Not sure about P6000s to be honest, and I think there are better choices out there. Also, what size was it? Sounds like a lot of cash for one tyre...

Steve

P6000, egg on the inner side wall on more than one of them made them no longer a consideration for me

 £168 for 1 tyre? For a Fabia?

On 16" wheels I'm thinking 4 for £220 fitted (Falken 452) so yes that makes even the Michelin look cheap ;)

What's that phrase about a mile off again. :thumbdwn:

No probs with the Kumhos on SWMBOs, or indeed the Falkens on mine. The Kumhos are certainly better than the Bridgestones on SWMBOs previously (not hard), and I go so far as to stick my neck out and say that, on balance, the Falkens on mine are as good as the Contis, Toyos and Pirellis that I've had in the past. Maybe not as grippy as the Toyos, or with as much steering feel as the Pirellis, but good all-rounders IMHO... :ne_nau:

My thoughts are also 'dodgy batch', in which case it would have been worth taking it up with the supplier as being 'not of merchandable quality' under the Sale of Goods and Services Act. Sounds like it might be a bit late for that, though.

I ran Kumho KU11's on my old Vento, thought they were really good!

Much better than the Yoko A539's that were on the wheels before :thumbdwn:

Yeah I just paid £240 for 4 205/40/17 Falken 452's on the Fabia.

Yep and 4 T1-Rs cost me around £250 fitted last time...

Steve

Kumhos are normally pretty good - one of the best mid-range tyres. I guess like every brand, you get a dud, or some sort of internal damage from a pothole or kerbing.

As for the Pirelli P6000, they're probably one of the worst tyres I've ever used in my life. Even worse than the Goodyear NCT5 that are on the Vectra. Had the P6000 on my Corsa, factory fit. Fronts thankfully wore out in 12k, rears I got changed at the same time, was like driving on the bare rims. The P6000 is at least 15 years old now as far as design goes. Were replaced by the P6 years ago, which is itself being replaced very shortly.

I hope you didn't pay the money for a single tyre - in fact 2 for that is expensive.

Just looked at my new tryes, and there not Pirelli P6000 like I said, there P7000. Doh.

There 205/40/17's (got two fitted for £162, which I think isnt bad).

The tyres that where replaced are 'Kuhmo Ecsta Supra'. (AKA 712's i think).

Ive run Kuhmo's before and not had a problem with them. Although they dont beat the Toyo R888 i ran on my Mini (proper one, not a bmw).

Still heard nothing from them. So not happy atall!!

Im going to bomb them with emails till they help, 'cos it have blown on the motorway or anything!

Ah well, not so bad for two then. But still not a great tyre IMO.

205/40/17 is a fairly cheap size as I only paid £55 each from Camskill for T1-Rs, plus a reasonable fitting charge at my local tyre fitter:

Car Tyres - MPV Tyres - People Carrier Tyres :: R17" - 205/40/17, 205/40 R 17 ::

And never mind emailing them, and wasting time emailing them some more - phone them! :)

I suppose your right.

Im not the type of person to want to get £5000 for almost blowing a tyre, but just payment for inconvieniance would be nice (new tyres, and having half day at work to sort them out).

I had to get P7000 'cos they had just fitted 6 205/40/17's to two cars before me.

(thats 4 on one car and 2 on another before anyone says anything :) ).

TR1's next probably.

Sertanly wont be Kumhos, thats for sure.

ive had the Kumho Ecsta's and cant really fault them... Pirelli p6000's were aweful hope the 7000 variant is a little better and the prices your paying for tires is way over the odds IMO

Yeah, prices are high, but I had to get what they had.

I did shop around abit.

Usually I get my mate to get me tyres and fit them as he was the forman in a garage.

But he moved to working for TopGear (TV Show), and they didnt pay him for 2 months or so, so he had to leave. So cant get tyres cheap at the mo.
