painting primed plastic

Featured Replies

I've managed to smash one of my wing mirrors. The replacement I can get only comes in primed black plastic.

How easy is it to get a good colour match (red) to the original? Is it a DIY job (no experience of painting car parts), or would I be better sending it to the professionals.

If it needs to be a professional job where would you recommend (I'm in Leicestershire) and how much is it likely to cost?

cheers

My milotec grill in silver cost £60 cash in hand from my local paintshop recently when I had it done. I don't know if metallic's still cost more than regular paint though and it is bigger than a mirror housing so I reckon £30 - £40 should cover it.

My advice would be to get a quote for cash from a paintshop.

I did mine myself, with a rattle can, but it takes quite a bit of time and effort to get right. It is possible though.

Straight or metallic?

I'd have a go at straight paint with a rattle can warmed to 20ishC (if SWMBO permits, hang the mirror in a big cardboard box, spray inside the box, close whilst drying and repeat)

I'd get a bodyshop to do metallic.

Just had my drivers mirror wafted about 6 weeks ago at Morley Slater in Derby, cost £25 +vat and they've done a good job. This was an extra to an insurance job so they already ha the paint:thumbup:

it's the flat tomato red colour (not metallic), if it's only £25 ish then i'll probably get it done properly.

if i did go down the diy route do i just do it in several layers, do i need to prime the plastic or do anything between coats, do i need to laquer it as a last coat?
