Four year old Furby - are Skoda trying to......

Featured Replies

.....bend me over and shaft me!!!

Bought my Furby at the beginning of November - '04 plate with 38k on the clock so i knew it was gunna need a bit of work soon enough.

It has just ticked over 40k this week so called my local main stealer and enquired about cam belt work etc

I was told that a 4 year service is a "major one" so would be £300

and that its probably due a brake fluid change which would be £47

changing of the cambelt, tensioners, water pump and related fluids would be £480

From reading here i knew that cam belt work doesn't come cheap but should i be wracking up over £800 of work in one visit or are they taking the p1ss?!:thumbdwn:

Opinions, previous pricing, or advice on Cheltenham or more South Westerly independants to speak to!

GBP 600 is probably nearer the mark for a dealer, and maybe GBP400-450 at an independent if you're lucky, but it's not cheap either way. It's that or run the risk of needing a new engine, though. You'll probably find that the prospect of this service was what made the previous owner sell, but OTOH, you probably won't need to do it again as long as you own the car, so once it's done, it's done...

All three prices seem a bit steep to me, try another dealer if you can as they all have different labour rates.

I have a mate who runs a garage of his own and a cousin who is a VW mechanic who would both do the work for mates rates/beer but thought i'd speak to the dealer as a first point and then hopefully save a considerable packet over their quote.

details of what i should be asking them to do much appreciated.....

I'll echo the above views.

My local dealer quoted £813 for the work, so I took it to a highly respected local VAG specialist who did the job for £440.

Never been back to the dealer since.... :)

Get genuine parts from VW and get your mate to do it for you at mates rates IMHO. Make sure you get the full cambelt kit and not just the belt.

Hey Beck,

Sorry to hear that! 40k is a big service, normally consists of:

Air filter

Fuel filter

Pollen filter

Brake fluid

Oil & Filter

Screen wash

etc etc...

Skoda recommend to change the cambelt every 60k or 4 years I think?

I might be able to get the parts cheap for you (all main agent) but depends if you want the book stamped or not for the service?

If you do want it serviced through a main dealer try Winner Garage in Cinderford (where I used to work) mention my name and they may do you a discount.

Hope this helps

Thanx Callum but it's Cliff her other half

(Beck does facebook and i do Briskoda! What a pair of geeks!)

Beck's cousin is a mechanic over at VW vans Gloucester so he can get the parts etc and do the work but prob with no stamp. He did say before we bought the Fab that it shouldn't need changing till 60k however i very much don't want it to go bang!!

He's my next point of contact about it, but i think VW have stopped personal jobs being done in their workshop so he'd have to do it at home and dunno if he has the equipment etc etc

Mate had his done at Bedford Steet Motors in Glos for £560 which seems reasonable given the dealer price.

The hunt (and saving) goes on!

i don't NEED 17" spiders anyways!
