Disconnect High Level Brake Light

Featured Replies

My local garage are having trouble getting me a new light unit for the rear window (Whats That Smell) B*ll ****. As bits of it are still working i'd like to disconnect it temporarily until they get me one does anyone out there in Briskyland know the best way to do it. Any help gratefully recieved.

Thanks Guys

If it's the same as the Mk1 then there is a clip at both ends.

If it works at all, I would leave it alone until you get the replacement. Some LEDs working are better than nothing!

I was just thinking of it from a police point of view, with it not working correctly it will draw unwanted attention from the boys in blue  especially at this time of year. if it wasn't working at all nobody would be any the wiser i don't want to take the unit out just disable it.

Isn't there a legal requirement to have a high level stop lamp?

its a legal requirement for new cars to have one, but think of the number of older ones that dont have one. I think it would fail an MOT with it not working, but i don't think you'd get pulled for it not working

Not sure about that. The MOT checks that everything is working, but the Traffic Offence is that if it is fitted it must be working. Part working, like this could be an expensive legal grey area!!

Is it Bulbs or LED's?

Part of it working is fine, but if it did not work at all then you could run the risk of being pulled over.

However, it's unlikely you'd be ticketed for one faulty light, but like you said, at this time of year it's just used as an excuse to pull you over and stick you on the breathalyser.

It's LED's it needs a new unit which is on order under warranty so it's just temporary until it arrives.

Got the call from the dealer today it's arrived being fitted Thursday morning so i guess i'll not bother messing about at this late stage it's only taken 3 months. :( still better late than never and i'll be back to a full light show for Christmas.

I had a partly lit rear brake light on my old car (the left two out of about a dozen lights didnt light up) when it got taken to a Peugeot main dealer for MOT and was told that it wasnt an MOT fail because it was less than 50% of the light which was out. Therefore i'd assume that >50% functionality will satisfy any copper in the long term. When i say long term there is always a danger if it isnt an actul traffic cop that they'll try to tell you something is illegal when it isnt, and even then you'd hope they'd be hard pushed to sucessfully fine/prosecute you (nothing surprises me when it comes to the long arm of the law any more though)

Of course this is largely based upon assumptions:)
