thoughts on 19's?

Featured Replies

thinking about getting 19's, whts everyones opinion on them?

they are certainly cheap enough but what will they do to the car?

cheers

Alan

I have 19" RS8's on the car at the moment with KW Coilovers. I am going to change down to 17's for the winter and sell the 19's.

If I buy 19's again it will be lightweight 19's as I find the cheaper/heavier replica wheels ruin the handling of the car. Don't get me wrong they look fantastic on the car but I'm more interested in the performance and driveability of the car.

Hope this helps

John

Anything above 15" degrades grip over bumps (pot holes etc) and ride quality. IMHO the large sizes eg 19's I agree with John don't drive as well. Overall, the more oversize you go, the worse to drive, but the looks will impress some. On a smooth road in the dry on the limit you *may* get more cornering forces, dependant on a few factors. Straight light stability, ride quality, tramlining, torque steer & drift all get worse the wider you get.

cheers guys, the thing is my vrs alloys are losing air for some reason just now and i don't know why, its not the tyres, so other than cracked i'm not sure, but all 4 tyres are losing some, one only say 1psi over2 week and the worst going from 35 to 10psi over a fortnight, which is crap :(

thats why i'm tinkin of changing really

Alan I would get them down to your local tyre depot probably not the one who fitted the last tyres on the car and have them check them out or refit the tyres with new valves.

The only reasons I can think of that you would be loosing that much pressure is dodgy fitting, valves or porous alloy (Very unlikely)

It's extremely common, go get your tyres removed & you'll see were the bead sits muck and corrosion. This needs to be cleaned off with a wire wheel/emry and smoothed down to a scratch free surface, or if just wire wheel (like tyre places) they a coating of thick non-setting anti leak/corrosion 'gunge'. Or take them home, clean the bead area up and paint it with an alloy primer & a coat of good paint, let it set & take them back to re-fit the tyres. Done well, this fixes them for good.

Check they are not warped before you bother, half of the bigger alloys are. the inside rim is so far away from the bolts when hitting a pot hole it buckles the wheel a little, common on 16" upwards. If any are I'd get a replacement or you'll always have slight wobble/won't drive quite perfectly smooth/uneaven tyre wear if severe.
