Drilled VS Grooved?

Featured Replies

Hey guys, noticed recently that theres been alot of talk about Brakes and it got me thinking, Which is better? Drilled discs or Grooved discs? what are the advantages/disadvantages of both? Cheers.

In all honesty.

Plain.

They are quiet and dont crack.

If you must i'd take groved over drilled.

they are just for show...

Plain, normal ones. Unless you're planning on braking from 250mph...

The grooved ones tell you when to replace the discs - if you need to be told when to do this, but even at their best, they will still make a bit of noise while braking. I use them on the front of my Passat, but that was to solve a brake "wash-out" problem in salty wet cold conditions - on the Polo I've just bought plain ones as I can work out when the discs need changing (when does the warmer weather come along?).

...for that commuter/tube train entering a station sound. :)

Drilled or grooved discs are really for track days, and are not designed to last long. They tend to crack after prolonged use. Drilling or grooving reduces rotor mass, so brakes heat up quicker = fade unless you use matching pads. Waste of money really. If standard brakes can pass an MOT they are good enough.

Just to contradict most of the rumblings on here, I did 50,000 hard miles and several track days on x drilled Zimmermans, with various pads and they were fantastic. They faded less and performed better than standard.

I think the quality of the disc and standard of the material is more important than drilling or grooving though.

30k on grooved ones here :) still going good

Grooved ones de-glaze the pads more efficiently, drilled discs will tend to crack more easily.
