perfomance cams

Featured Replies

my old man mentioned me doing the cams on my car if i was going to tune it, then it dawned on me, ive not seen any tuned spec with uprated cams yet. has anybody on here changed the cams or even got the head polished etc

Cams would be the very last thing to do and even then probably wouldnt net you a massive ammount.

Certainly a good mod on a n/a car, less important on a turbocharged engine though, although the same principles apply.

The only ones doing an uprated cam for the 1.9PD were Allards - I asked them specifically and was told they're not surface-hardened afterwards. Likely to wear out rather fast.

IIRC Jason had a trial of one with poor results...

Jason had porting and polishing done...

Dbilas make a regrid PD cam.

OP has a TFSi

I'm pretty sure the S3/Cupra has a different cam.

the latest engines are so well designed these days , that the addition of a performance cam and/or porting make little to no difference in the power output , making it an expensive mod for very little gains

I did email dbilas at the same time as Allards, but didn't get any reply and sort of lost interest because of the messing about to fit it.... If I had really wanted, I could have gotten the Allards cam and then had a mate here surface-harden it, but unless its chemically done it'd have likely warped..

The mate out here has an industrial camshaft-grinding machine, but without the specs plus the amount of work to get it all safely sorted and fitted put me off....

I did find the idea of a stroker kit interesting but apparently the source is East European and difficult to track down...

Imagine 2.1L displacement, now that's interesting...

Perhaps Jason could arrange a GB after he recovers from his hangover?

I looked at the stroker kit.

You loose alot of rev's (wont be able to rev as high).

2.1 would be nice tho.

Better getting low compression pistons and stronger rods to tell the truth.

P+P would give you performance gane, but not alot.

Im porting my own head (done a few to say the least). And porting the manifold to match.

Doing it yourself is the only way to make it worth doing, as im saving a lot of money, but its not easy, and you need access to a flow bench really. Cost me about £60 for second hand head, stripped it down and I already had the porting tools, but they where about £150 for a good set (not a dremel!!)

Done pics up to now, but no previews till its been dyno'd.

Cams arnt worth doing unless like me, your rebuilding the head.

Doing a rebore from 79.5mm to 83mm on a 1.9PD block is straight forward and JE Pistons in America will make custom forged 83mm pistons for about $655 a set. Forged rods are easy to get from HERE or i am thinking about just getting a standard set CRYO treated when i get other componants done. I wouldn`t bother with cams for a road 1.9 PD car as it revs to low plus it`s only 8v so where you gain at the top you will loose at the bottom.

@lofty - can I ask -who supplies the stroker kit? A loss of a up to 500 rpm might be tolerable.

@ DMB -So that overbore would give you about 1.983cc? And the pistons would allow you to drop the CR and increase turbo boost.

Now what if you could combine both the mods - wonder what you would end up with..

Stroker kit apparently gives you 2.1 liters - with an overbore about 2.19 - is that right? And then you could drop the CR and up the boost...

Sounds like a plan..

Either you end up with a genuine 300bhp engine :thumbup:or a piece of junk metal :thumbdwn:....

Bas, increasing to 83mm pistons would take you upto 2067cc not 1983cc :)

not sure what the stroke could be increased to but i know there's a 100mm crank which combined with the 83mm pistons will see 2164cc

Thanks mate. So in theory, just from the volume increase (never mind about messing about with the Compression Ratio/Boost (drop in CR allowing more boost) you're talking about: 250/1898 * 2164 = 285 bhp.

Not worth it.

Wonder how one could stuff a Chevy Small-block (5.7 V8 Petrol) into a fabia....

power doesn't really work like that now does it Basil ;)

also don't forget that not only do you have a bigger engine so making more power but your also turbo charging a bigger engine so yet more power, your pushing more exhaust gases so greater spool etc etc. you can't calculate it as simply as that sadly :)

If i was looking to make big power from a 1.9PD i would rebore it and fit forged pistons. Not worth reboring my block for 1 extra mm.

Basil.

Cant remember the stroker kit place, but that took it to 2.1 I think, that and a rebore could be fun.

It was quite dear from what I remember. I just browsed google for about 6hours. (other search engines are avalible).

Iv say your better off finding a 16v TDi lump thats a straight swap if you want the block type.

Other option is a big valve head rather than cams, but not much has been done on TDi heads.

I will be putting big valves in, just because the head isnt on the car, doesnt need to be for a while,

But mainly just because I can.

Dave

Man, if I came into some money I would be sending my spare ASZ block off for a rebore, and build myself up a new bottom end complete with oversize pistons and a balanced lightened crank. Would imagine I would be looking at least £2,500 for just making up the engine alone before having to fit it in my car.

Then I'd be looking for new car insurance as I break the one mandatory rule of my policy :(
