Octy vRS notchy gear change

Featured Replies

Hey all...was just wondering how long it takes for the gearbox to free up on the octy? I've got 3k on it now, and the change is still quite notchy, and there can be a certain amount of resistance on a quick gear change. Works better with slow smooth movements, but it's still not as smooth as a lot of the cars I've driven.

Cheers

Mine's on 18K now and just nice.

Can't say i noticed the precise point when it was "run in" though...

Give it a bit more time, it will improve. Mine is quiet smooth and seems ok at shifting even on track. The gear change is much smoother than the Alfa I have been driving for the last 2 weeks with its rubbery and not so precise change.

Suppose it's still fairly new at 3k...as I say, it just seems to be quick changes. However, I did notice from the start that the gears don't like to be pushed in, they prefer to be encouraged.

Mike's done 35k now and it

My gearbox has 10K on it now and it's still notchy and take to long to change gear, it make's the car very hard to drive fast it needs a quick shift! Was gona try changin the gear oil for liter oil.

mines done 41k and is still notchy one of those things!!! Had a few embarrassing moments when changing gears fast i.e it didn't wanna go in so crunch!!!!! to find it

Mines done almost 35k and the gear change is smooth. Box doesn't like to be rushed though....then it can be a bit obstructive.

My Octy had a new 'box before I bought it and second gear especially was very obstructive, once it hit 5K miles it eased off well, I prefer the gearchange in the Furbie much shorter and smoother.

i think i was told that these VW box's don't have a synchro on first or reverse hence the slight crunch if not totaly relaxed witht he change. don't know for sure though

VAG gearboxes have fully synchronised forward gears.

My vRS has done 49K now and i have had it from new. For a good 7K getting in to third was a real problem and somewhat embarrassing when trying to wipe the smile off these boy racers. However it cleared up. but recently getting into first from 20mph > is a bit of a problem. my vRS will do 1st 43mph, 2nd 73mph 3rd 110mph and 4th 137mph 5th gives you warp speed at 150mph max (GPS 147mph, but i was more conserned with the cars flashing by me on the M74 then the GPS readout).

Have had no problem with my vRS gears- now 25K. However my last Felicia did give trouble when it was at about 2000 miles. I had taken it on a long journey and the gears got harder and harder to select as the miles went by. However after the car had sat overnight the gear change was fine and never got stiff again.

Question William:

Do Furby's have same box as ocy?

Don't know nick, not all Octys have the same box. My wifes 1.6 has a different box than my vRS. Perhaps Furbys with a given engine have the same box as an Octy with the same engine???

The only reason I had trouble with the gears on this motor to start with was that I was everso used to driving my old Rover. The clutch on the Rover didn't bite until it was a good two inches off the floor, whereas this one bites as soon as you lift your foot off the deck. Normal use was fine, but if I went into that half-autopilot state I slipped back into Rover-gearchange mode and it seems I'd been educated to start raising my foot before the gear lever had even moved!

It only took .. oohhh .. four different occasions with loud "graunch" noises engaging a gear to re-educate the old noggin :)
