Tyre pressures for heavy load

Featured Replies

Afternoon all,

Hope everyone had a good Christmas :D

I'm doing a 500 mile trip tomorrow with 4 full size adults and a boot full of stuff (basically as much stuff as I could fit in as I'm moving house).

The rear tyres are usually at 2.1 bar, but the high load pressure is listed as 3.1... Which if my maths is correct, is around 45psi.

This seems very high to me. The maximum pressure listed on the (brand new) tyres is 51psi, and whilst I know 45 is not above 51, I expect the pressure to increase on a run.

Does 45psi sound right, or am I missing something?

P.S. This is actually a Passat, but the principal is the same.

It's correct. Don't forget that loading a vehicle to this extent, although within allowable limits, will compromise handling and stopping. This applies particularly if the road surface is adverse - as it will be.

Have a good trip.
