am i the only fool to have done this....?

Featured Replies

needed to change a brake light bulb just, and having changed the bulb went to put the holder back onto the rear of the cluster and one of the bulbs popped right out and is now rolling around inside!!

as you may have gathered i was doing it in a rush because it was a bit nippy outside(must have knocked one of the bulbs without realising!)

can anybody tell me if its possible to get the bulb back out?

i noticed there were two nuts on the back of the cluster (inside the boot), but i thought i'd leave it till the morning!

if i remove these nuts will i be able to get to the bulb?

(sorry if this has been covered before, had a quick search but nothing jumped out at me)

You're not the only one to have done this, I did the same on my VW Bora. I had to take the three nuts that fixed the cluster to the body off and retrieve the bulb that way.

D'oh!

yeah - undo the 4 bolts and the unit pops out. Be careful when undoing that last one as the light unit will just fall out onto the pavement/drive.... Very easily breakable. Best story when I had one break was my mate was pushing a boat on a trailer and the outboard prop went through it! :D Better than hitting the car I guess. Once out, you can just roll the bulb back out on of the 4 holes. :)

great, thanks guys

those bolts are quite small - 8mm from memory.

I've bought the wrong bulbs for the works mondy (damn halfords guide was wrong), just placed in the estates light clusters, slammed the boot and cracked a cluster.

Luckily I found one at a breakers for beer money.

hope ive got a spanner to suite that!!

Pencil/doweling and Blu-Tac and about 5 minutes of fishing should sort it!

Yes halfords are shocking for bulbs, i bought some QR382 bulbs to find they were 21W/5W instead of 21W/4W.

sorted it out this morning.

broke the black trim that surrounds the edge of the boot though :(

anybody know the codes for the trim pieces and how much they are likely to cost?

the ones in question are:

the large black one around the boot catch held in place with 2 philips head screws and 2 10mm nuts

and the smaller black one that comes up towards the parcel shelf held with clips (offside on RHD vehicle)

the large one isnt too bad its just a bit dented on the one end (i can be a bit anal at times)

thanks in advance

(oh and thanks again to devonutopia - your memory served you correctly (8mm spanner))

The big bit isn't expensive- about £12 IIRC. I broke mine with the spare wheel....

How did you damage them?

:) Bit late now but, fished mine out with a screwdriver with a bit of double sided

foam tape on the end too. I'd changed my buld and failed to connect it properly, accelerated

away and heard the bulb drop out, followed by warning light:doh::doh:

Failing that, a steep hill may help.

delcac - surely that would have to be one hell of a steep hill?

Tom_vRS - the final nut is behind the smaller of the plastic trim, i think 2 or 3 of the clips on the back of it broke and when removing the smaller piece the little lashing hoop? in the boot got in the way and as i pulled the smaller piece it put two dents in the larger piece. in hindsight i'd have stripped off the big piece first and took my time with the smaller piece.

I managed to loose a bulb in my headlight!!

Had to take the headlight right off, just to get it out!

Gurrr.
