2000 skoda fabia 1.4 8v idle rev not stable, engine shaking

Featured Replies

Hi, I have a 2000 skoda fabia 1.4 8v, and the engine is shaking when the car is idle and I can see the rev going down and up, very unstable, but when driving it seems fine, the rev just unstable, but won't cut off. anyone had the same issues? I was told this could be several reasons, it could be the spake plug, air filer, MAF, engine mount, or maybe it's the timing chain, BTW, I did noticed some kind of metelic noise from engine, after reading other people's post, I know this is caused by the time chain, but nothing to worry about, is this true? and do I have to change the timing chain like change cambelt in a period of time? thank you for all the help and happy 2009

Any fault codes logged?

Any fault codes logged?

Hi, I haven't took it to garage yet, and I don't have vag-com so I really don'tknow.

It is quite likely that the throttle body needs cleaning. If the car does not reach normal operating temperature when driving, the thermostat could have broken up. A new thermostat assembly comes with a temperature sensor, which is another item that will affect the fuelling. Both of these are a relatively straight forward DIY proposition. It may pay to get the throttle body reset with diagnostic equipment, though I think that this can be acheived by having the drivers door open and switching on the ignition (not starting the engine) for a minute.

With regard to the timing chain, people tend to get them done when the noise becomes excessive.

A fault code read may not reveal anything, unless the engine management light is on.

Thanks for the suggestion, I just noticed today, when the engine is cold, the rev seems quite stable, but when the car running for a while and the engine reachs the normal temp, it just become unstable, is this somthing to do with the throttle body, or to do with the air control sensor. (lambda sensor?) BTW the car does reach normal temp when driving. thanks again for all the help.
