some car care questions

Featured Replies

Santa was kind and got me a Megiuars Gold Class wash and wax kit, some nxt glass cleaner, a microfibre wash mitt, a spoke brush and some alloy wheel cleaner stuff. Now usually i'll just chuck the local guys at the garden centre £6 to give the car a quick clean so to do it all myself is new territory for me! Will be giving the car a clean tomorrow to try it all out but have a few questions.

I was wondering if the Liquid Wax should be used on chrome bits on the car - it does say to not use on the rubber and vinyl bits so i'll avoid all the trim bits.

Also is ther any wisedom in using the glass cleaner on both sides of the glass or just the outside?

I'll follow the tbm and do my best, might even put some autosol on the exhaust if i can be bothered after all this! If it looks any good might even get the camera out!

Any advice as always appreciated. Cheers guys!

best person to ask with meqiuars stuff in baker21, personally ive never used the stuff as i try to use the autoglym stuff myself.

You can use the wax on chrome if you like, might give it a little protection.

Use the glass cleaner on both sides apply with a MF and go over with a clean one.

Apply the wax nice and thin and try to apply atleast 2 layers.

Thought of another question - should i use the liquid wax stuff on the wheels as well as i haven't got any specific wheel protection products?

It won't do any harm to put some on.

Might not last all that long but it will offer some protection.

Chemical Guy's Wheel Sealant and/or Poorboy's Wheel Guard is what you want to protect your alloys.

I will add my 2p following on from smstext's reply.............

You more than likely have some Megs Gold Class Shampoo? The Shampoo will be fine on all parts of the car and IMHO is a good shampoo, one thing that people seem to think is that foam / suds clean the car but it's all down to the lubricity of the solution which Gold Class has and is very good...........

The wax isn't and you can use it on the chrome parts of the car to add protection but ideally a good chrome / metal polish will make these parts shine better.......

Not sure which Glass cleaner you have but I am guessing it's the Megs Next Gen Glass Cleaner which I have used and it's not bad, there bulk Glass Cleaner is better but you can use it on both inside and out but it's essential you have a decent glass cleaning cloth to prevent streaks......

TBM is a must for any wash and ensure your washing the car safely but I am guessing if you have had it washed at 'garden centre' then maybe you will have plenty of swirling and scratching on the paintwork.......:(

When cleaning the glass do one side horizontally and the other side vertically. That way if there are any smears you know what side to clean.

I experimented by putting the wax bottle in some hot water while I polished with AG SRP. I used a polishing cloth from the AG Auto wax to buff off. Applied a thin layer of the Megs wax and used the same cloth to buff off the wax

Shame the car is now covered in salt dust, still day off tomorrow, Mrs Stigs Ferbi first................ :P

Well gave the car a clean today using all the advice above. Since it was my first go at doing things properly i think it didn't go too bad considering! First had to defrost the hose as it was frozen solid! Only managed one coat of the Megs FC Liquid Wax as i ran out of daylight, will aim to get another coat on in the next few days. Pretty sure it looks the best it has since i picked her up - will confirm in the morning light!

Would anyone suggest another wax i should use on top of the one coat i've got on - something i can get hold of easily in halfords?

I have used both Gold class wax and Nxt Tech wax and Tech wax 2. They are good products and will produce decent results but a better option is one of the harder waxes.

I have tried Colinite 917 but my favourite is the Autoglym HD wax.

You will struggle to get a decent wax from Halfords I am afraid mate or at least one that is durable enough during these harsh months......

You would be better off ordering this kit which is great vaule for money:

- Collinite #476s Paste Wax Detailing Kit Elite Car Care

Megs Gold Class is the best smelling car shampoo in the whole world

what about the collinite 915 detailing kit they have on offer too - which is better or is it 'horses for courses'?

I find that the two differenct waxes work better on specific colours but IMHO the 915 isn't as durable as the 476..........:(

Well that sounds like a Megs retail outlet...........:D
