vRS Power Problems

Featured Replies

Hi,

Hoping all you guys can help.

I've got a vRS '04 plate and it's since developed a really strange problem. When i start it doesn't have as much power as when i start it from warm.

If i start it cold and wait until it warms up, if i floor it it seems like there is huge turbo lag and it doesn't develop much torque. it was so bad one day i was doing 70 in 5th on the motorway and when i went to accelerate it hardly moved.

HOWEVER... If i just pull over and resart the car then i get huge power and all the torque is back.

I've got warranty on the car so whatever it is should be covered by this, but obviously i want to make sure the right thing is being fixed.

Car has got an induction kit on but it had that when i bought it.

I'm guessing lambda sensor but i could really do with someone who knows more about these cars than i do.

Sounds like your car is going into limp mode, A diagnostics check would be my first port of call.

Not many people run a regular induction kit and i would guess towards that and/or the MAF to begin with but a fault should be stored I would imagine.

Not sure... I'm convinced it's not remapped. It's got huge torque and it's fast but i'm not sure it's had any mapping done.

I was chasing a Civic Mk2 the other day and it couldn't gat away from me in a straight upto 130 so i think it's standard.

Though it is almost as if the engine is in a different mapping each time i start the engine.

Strange thing is there is no light on the dash to show limp mode but that is what it feels like

This is a common problem with VVT 150 & 180 bhp engines 30% of cars over

30,000 miles coming in for re - maps will have the fault code logged boost

pressure loss between turbo & throttle when in reality there is no leak,

once triggered the turbo will run actuator pressure until you turn the

ignition off then on again. To alleviate the problem remove the boost pipe

to the throttle body, push the throttle flap open & wipe round with a cloth,

remove any accumulated sludge wetting the cloth with petrol or carb cleaner,

do not use tissue as it can break up & get left in the inlet manifold. Re

fit the boost pipe then turn on the ignition, but do not start engine leave

for 2 - 3 minutes before starting the engine. As mentioned earlier, it's a

common problem on standard cars, but less noticeable as the boost difference

between the standard 0.6 bar & 0.35 actuator pressure.

Give it a try ;)

that's awesome, thanks.

sounds likely as it's only just ticked over 35k miles

I had this on Saturday, but luckily I have a boost gauge, so it's very easy to diagnose.

I was peaking at just 5psi, which was depressing!

After a quick restart I was back to 10psi though.

I've been meaning to clean my TB for a while now, I guess I better get on with it!

Mine has been doing this for a while now - it feels a bit sluggish until you pull over and switch the ignition off, then it comes back to life again.

I cleaned the throttle body (very thoroughly, and replaced the gasket) in November though, although I didn't do the key-in-ignition for 2-3 minutes thing, just started it up and took it for a 25 minute drive at a variety of speeds. Will take it apart again soon and leave it for a few minutes as suggested.

Edit: Reading that other thread about this problem I can see why it might have adapted itself to be sluggish....I do tend to drive like a granny to work and back (it only goes above 3000rpm a few times a week :))

out of curiousity how often should a throttle body require cleaning.

I got the car at 81k and had a new throttle body fitted under warranty in the first month of ownership :D Car has done 106k now so would it be due a clean.

Mine had never been cleaned before when I did it and the car had done over 103k miles but it wasn't as dirty as I thought it was going to be. A lot of the muck can be avoided if you fit a catch can system, that's my aim for when the insurance allows

did this cure the problem though, mr. eyebrow? mine has done this 2 or 3 times now in the last week or so, but i recently (november) cleaned the tb to cure a poor cold idle, ever since my car has run like a dream, until this prob occured that is:(. surely the tb wouldn't need cleaning again already? cheers in advance for any advice:thumbup:

I cleaned mine just for the hell of it really, it has cured the flat spot I was getting at about 1800 revs though, and like you Ben mine has been running really well (when not sluggish!). It hasn't made a blind bit of difference to this sluggishness problem, so I will give it another clean and this time leave the ignition on for a few minutes before starting it and taking it for a drive and see if that helps.

Other option is to properly re-align the throttle body with VAG COM and see if that makes a difference I spose
