EGR valve failed

Featured Replies

Hi everyone,

I've got a superb 130 pd and for some time now the egr valve has be chucking out oil. The cars a 55 plate and done 200k so can't really complain. Has also been mapped about 100k ago but now feels a bit down on power. Now i'm sure the engine could just be getting a bit tired at 200k but just wondered if the egr maybe part of the problem? Does the oil coming out mean another part may of failed? Any advice welcome.

hi ben. i have a fabia vrs .its 56 reg and had it from 5 miles brandnew. it has always dribbled oil out of egr valve and dealer said it was normal.had to get bigger 18mm gasket fitted tho after 10k.the engine would shuder at 2000rpm before it was fixed.hope my vrs does 100k let alone 200k!

That gasket would have fixed the well documented BLT engine hesitation, nothing to do with oil.

Mine leaks a little as well, it's nothing to worry about unless it gets to a stream. If your EGR fails anyway, just bypass it ;)

Welcome to the forum btw :)

It's got a bit more than a dribble, whole of that side of engine covered. can jet wash it all but will be same again following day. Bluefox, are you talking about the allard kits that are on ebay? If so are they any good? What difference do they really make? Just really looking for reasons it might be bit down on power. Can't fault the car at all really, still on original clutch!!!!

There are a number of causes of this problem but first check that the air cleaner element is absolutely clean. The oil in the EGR housing comes from the crankcase breather via the turbocharger compressor and often first accumulates in the charge cooler.

VAG just don't seem to appreciate that the compressor will pull the oil out of the crankcase breather if there is any undue restriction in the air cleaner. If they had understood this, they would not have set such insane intervals for changing it.

Obviously on an old engine you will always see some leakage here, but fit a new (OE or Mann & Hummel) air cleaner element first. Don't even consider "boy racer" types - they are not properly specified for the job.

Are you just meaning new filter when you say air cleaner? There isn't another air cleaner that needs changing is there? We change the air filter at every service and only use genuine parts (friend with trade account at TPS:thumbup:). Think maybe it is time for new egr. Have looked at the allard replacement pipes, but can't help feeling if the egr wasn't need, then it wouldn't be there! Also think maybe time to strip and clean turbo to try find some of my lost power. Have seen a thread on here about that, just need to be brave i think.

There is only one air cleaner element. If the engine is not achieving boost, an error flag will be set. Read the codes.

If you have an "oily" engine, at 200k miles the EGR and inlet manifold will also need a good clean out - they will be full of sooty wet gunk. This is probably why the engine is down on power and it will not leave a code as the boost pressure transducer is upstream of the EGR.

Don't fiddle with the turbocharger unless you have a cast iron reason to go there - other than sticking VNT vanes which will leave a code, they are very reliable - if periodic maintenance has been done correctly.

Ok, Will start there and see where we're at. have cleaned the egr before but not the inlet manifold. Engine has been very reliable so i've got no complaint. Regular servicing with qaulity parts has helped there i think.

I'm not sure of the kits you speak of - but yes, I'm aware Allard do EGR bypasses. Try speaking to Devonutopia on here; amongst others of course. There's a few with EGR bypasses, but I'm not sure if any of them have AWX's.
