Breakdown Cover

Featured Replies

Thinking of getting some as the intercooler pipe popping off was a bit of an eye-opener...

So, whose everybody got? I've looked at AA/RAC/Green flag, and just wanted to see if anyone has any personal recommendations.

Cheers.

Try you're insurance co/broker - mine's doing a great deal .

Shy clear of the "from " deals one company is offring - thats for brand new customers only .

The AA are expensive for decent cover, but they will attend any breakdown you have, in any car, even if you are a passenger in someone else's motor. Their response times are poor. I use the AA but only for a medical reason, plus I have two cars.

RAC have better techs IMHO

Green Flag, very cheap, and I have only ever heard good things about them.

Make sure you read the small print. My girlfriend has cover with her insurance company, and when her auxilary drive belt broke on the motorway between Cardiff and Ross on Wye they said they could only take her a maximum of 10 miles. Luckily she was something like 9.6 miles from home, but should she have travelled any further (anywhere in the region of 30 or 40 miles) then she'd have been stuck in the middle of nowhere.

I'm with RAC

It depends on the packages you're offered.

If you have a good package Roadside/Recovery then they will tow you home.

I just have roadside/recovery which will tow you home if they can't fix. I dont have the onward travel though.

I am with the RAC and had to use the in the summer for a coolant hose which went! I waited 2 hours 20 minutes  - so I don't recommend them. Luckily where I was broken down was right outside a garage - so when they didnt have any coolant OR water  :thumbdwn: I could get my hands on some! If I had a pair of pliers on me I would have fixed it myself however lack of tools didn't help! All they did was cut the hose and re-attach at full stretch.

My dad then had a problem with his coolant hose later in the summer - it took them 2 and 1/2 hours to get out to us - just at home. We couldn't remove the clip - which they did do for us, however the clip they put back on was soon leaking a few days later

Would be interested in what other people recommend - was tempted to try the AA for my next years membership.

Brittania cover through the CSMA. £114 for delux cover covers us both in any car and includes european cover for a nominated car. Provides hire car for 3 days should the car not be able to be fixed when recovered to a garage and the usual home start, relay etc.

Anyone who works or have worked in the public sector and their families(I think) can join CSMA.

Have called them on 2 occassions because they use a local agent they come pretty quick. On both counts managed to fix the car even when the gear linkage broke he managed to cobble it together with enough nuts and bolts to see me through the weekend(this was Fri afternoon). So I was pretty impressed.

Like any type of insurance price is only a small part in deciding It's the quality of service that really matters if your stuck out in the cold, wet dark middle of nowhere.

My experience with the AA and RAC has never been very good, especially considering they cost double the alternatives. I've been with Tesco Green Flag for the last few years but haven't called them out for a while. On the occasions I did they arrived quickly and sorted things out or towed me to the garage of my choice (within 10 miles).

Changed insurance companies recently and was offered a switch to UK Mondial breakdown for £45 a year. Looked at what is covered and seems very comprehensive and covers everything but breaking down in Europe so I've taken them up. No idea if they're available directly but may be worth a look.

Britannia also come highly recommended, but no direct experience of them.

I'm with green flag and I had problems with my car alarm so called them out to disconnect it (as I'm not too clued up on cars) they came out in about 40mins but sent a mechanic who was going to cut through the fuel line of my car as he thought it was the alarm sensor.

In the end I solved the problem myself but it was rather worrying to say the least

I would recommend the AA or RAC

In Cornwall -

Green Flag - Don't really have any techs here.

AA - have 2 techs, one of whom is good the other is useless.

RAC - 4 techs, all of whom are very good.

I think it's very dependant on your area as to the quality of service. I've tried all three down here.

If you only have one car and want vehicle based cover get asda breakdown cover, it's cheaper... plus I think RAC are the only ones that come out to accidents so if you smash in to the curb (like i did last night oops) then AA or greenflag wont come out and just say contact your insurer...

Oh yeah.. anyone got any suspension wishbone or track rod ends going for a VRS ?

Anything that AA can put down to accident they will and charge you .-about £113 .Knocked the plastic under front skirt ,called them out (or tried to ) to remove it as I had no tools -they wouldn't come .So when mine's up I'm going RAC (via my insurance -full package adds up to about an extra £3 a month )
