Creaky rear suspension

Featured Replies

I noticed over the Christmas period that when I had anyone in the back seats, going over speed bumps would cause a creaky sound when the back end dropped down :(

baring in mind that temperatures were below 0 degrees, should i be worried about this? It sounds like some rubber bush is causing it, sounds like when the arb bushes on my astra went but from the back not front.

I did recently have my arb replaced, but if it was that wouldn't it happen when the front dropped down not the back?

Really can't afford more stuff done so hopefully this is something that can wait or is nothing to worry about :(

I get that creak in the cold too. I think it is the rear door seals because when you push on the door I get a creak from the frame. Some trim shine around the frame may help it.

Actually I forgot to mention that I'd tried jumping on all 4 corners of the door frames when the doors were open to try and replicate the noise but only creaks i got were from the handbrake...

so it could be that! will give it a go.

Have to say the colds created 2-3 more bad dash rattles I need to try and sort too the one behind the glove box is driving me mad!

Does it only happen when the backseats are occupied?

The reason i ask is because i had a creak from the back when going over speed bumps, but only when my 4 year old son was in his car seat. It turned out that when i was going over the bump and coming down the other side motion pushes his seat into the cars seat base which caused a creak. Very annoying at that.

Other than that it could just be down to the weather. Or have you been in at the spare wheel or tool kit recently?

I only really notice it when the back seats are occupied. with me and the missus in the car i hit one the other day doing about 20-25 to test it, not a peep.

thought I heard it this morning with just me in, but could of been something in the boot rolling about

I haven't been to the spare wheel kit, but i had a new clutch and arb recently so i assume someone else did to get the wheel nut adapter thing.

Will take a look thanks :)

SWMBO's does it all the time, when unoccupied, i just spray slightly diluted fairy liquid (other brands are available) onto the suspension bushes every now and again and it makes a difference. It needs fixing but not worth the expense on a car this old.

What bushes do you spray it on?

Spray the bushes for the back axle with white PTFE spray grease. Also the lower mounting points for the rear dampers.

does this stuff look ok to use?

Silicone Grease with PTFE > Maplin

I take it i'd need to jack up and remove the wheel to do that? :)

That will do nicely. You can do the work without taking the wheels off (although access is improved that way) Just jack it up, support on axle stands and spray away. PTFE does not attack rubber, so it's safe, and it protects the bushes from road grime. I use it on my Moggy Traveller Powerflex bushes all the time. I used it on my Polo and the consule bushes never failed.

fantastic will give it a try after the snows gone :) I take it the bushes for the axle are quite obvious to find? Didn't even know they existed

You can't Miss them. The Fabia has a solid beam axle (No Rear Arb as standard) there are bushes where it attaches to the Car's Chassis & where the Rear Shockers Mount...

Mine creaks like yours, But only @ temps of 1 Deg & below, Blinkin annoying mind , As mine only started after it went for it's M.O.T & they let all four wheels Dangle :D

I've got the creaks to!

Get them once in a blue moon in warmer weather.. but with this cold snap they're creaking allot more.. and a recent Manchester - London blast seems to have upset them.

Yesterday they were almost constantly creaking down one rubbish road I commute.. seriously thought the springs had popped of there top mounts or summit and were scrapping the top of the arch!

Today, only a couple of creaks. Still,.. I think it's greasing time!

I get the creaking noice and I know for certain its this bloody weather, didn't creak during the summer - only in the winter.

Same here, it was fine until the day after the MOT, never did it before so I sprayed them and now they are fine.

So there creaking is just the bushes drying out, not failure, as I don't want an expensive problem down the line??

Just to update...

OMG, is the supplied jack with the fabia the worst piece of bad designing ever or what? couldn't lift it high enough to use an axle stand, and it even slipped as it was raising it up against the floor. I couldn't use my old scissor jack due to the shape of the sills either.

In the end I didn't bother using it. I sucked in the belly and slid under the car and could access both sets of bushes well enough to spray. Bit hard to spray them with the brackets around but gave them a good spray with the ptfe silicone spray grease from maplins. Be careful if you do it yourself as the one set are very close to the disc brakes!

I had a look at doing the console bushes on the front, but they're covered in thick grease which in turn is covered in mud lol so i left them.

I went for a drive with 3 of us in the car... went over about 15+ speed bumps and I didn't hear a thing... I was driving really slow but still i'm pretty sure i'd of heard it!

So thanks again moggytech for the tip, much appreciated! (and everyone else who replied)

I had the same problem.

Cold weather deffo exacerbates the situation, but I did find a cure (similar to one noted above): creak-b-gone-no-more

I got that Spray from Maplin and did em' yesterday.. no squeaks today... but then, it's 8'c out side now.. not -1'c.. Soooooooooooo

Those of you that DIDN'T spray ya bushes.. are you still squeaking? Just wondering if the spray fixed mine or the return of a few C's?

Rob :D

Mine creaks when I stop after a run, just as i'm getting out of the car the d/s rear suspension creaks quite loudly!

you sure thats not the rear brake pads moving against the disc when the handbrake is on? Try leaving it in gear, handbrake off and step out the car see if its silent ;)

tried that! its definately something in the rear suspension!

I've had a similar creak since last week and was convinced it was the rear suspension. I took out the rear seats as it sounded like it was around the rear bulkhead. I got a mate to sit in the back and as I went over speed bumps he listened to see where it was coming from. Its actually coming from the trim in between the rear seat and the door. Anyone else ever come across this? any fixes?

Is new bushes the only way to stop this permanently?

After searching some more on the forum and through trial and error it seems like its the drivers chair that is creaking... All that after thinking it was the rear suspension
