Ipod to Sat nav connection

Featured Replies

Hope someone can offer advice on this. At Christmas I got an iPod touch and was wondering if I could connect it to the Aux connector on the back of the Sat Nav? Looking at the diagram I think I could use a modified Apple component lead. Any thoughts?

You can get the iPod lead from skoda and it simply plugs in where the CD changer lead plugs into. Takes about 30 mins to fit. Done mine and works perfecto..

I don't think you can do that... AFAIK the DX hasn't got a video in, but even if it has it'll be for a reversing camera.

It has got an audio aux-in though.

How does it work then? I have my PS2 plugging into the AUX function on the DX and can display Video and Sound..................

Oops! I forgot about your PS2!! :o

In which case then, to OP; get something that converts your iPod output to 3RCA (red, yellow, white) and then you can connect this to the DX.

Baker, is yours connected through 3RCA straight into the unit? Or do you need an adaptor?

My connector for the PS2 to the AUX plug on the DX is as follows:

On a similar theme, have had the ipod hooked up in the superb for ages using the skoda lead. Got an itouch for christmas. This will play through the same lead no problem. But i get a message saying charging is not supported! Can i make it charge through this?

I have the new iPhone 3G and have a similar issue with my Bose Soundock and Remote Dock for use at work. I believe that this is a common problem with the older Apple accessories and the only way around it is to purchase a newer accessory but I don't think that Skoda (VAG) will bring out a 'Version 2' lead.

Yeah, we're suffering from this as well.

We had this on our updates the other day:

"IPod Update

INFO

.. We have been made aware that since the introduction of several generations of iPod there are two

types of connector to iPods being used to connect an iPod to an aftermarket stereo with direct iPod

connection.

.. Certain models in the older iPod range use one type of connector and the new iPod models use a new

connector. This means that certain functionality on products purchased from us such as stereos may

be restricted by the customers’ generation of iPod."

This issue affects (generally) the newest generation iPod Touch & Nano - as I understand it the current iPod Classic is not affected. The problem is that the newer generation iPods generally do not charge; in some cases (i.e. on some units) they may not work at all - I'm not sure if a new lead will fix the problem. I think it's got something to do with the firmware of the newer generation units.

Obviously I've edited a couple of bits that are, er, "commercially sensitive", but you get the jist :)

I've got my own opinions as to why this has happened... but obviously it'd be unprofessional of me to comment

Thanks for the info Jon, fair to say that it's all about making money and Apple are clever cookies...........:D

Apple cookies? Interesting :P

I know nothing about iPods and their connectivity - I leave that to my 13yr old daughter. So, whether it's of interest or not (or even remotely connected to this thread or not) I don't know - but this week's edition of Autocar does moan about not being able to connect a new iPod thingummy model to a brand new Panasonic (?) head unit in their long-term SuziQ.

Well, that was worth saying wasn't it?

I wanted to connect to the Aux input to get video

I fitted a video link into the back of Ben Smiths superb. Live and earth from the back of sat nav and then plug the 3 AV leads from the back of the DVD player into the other end of the box and hey presto video on your nav screen. Also if you put a flick switch on the GALA wire you can was the screen while driving. Only for the passenger of course ;) ;) ;)

Agreed. The only thing I know about iPods is they're over priced, but sadly we sell them by the shedload and at the end of the day they have the most car instillation options.

Personally, I think they're all a waste of time. Why can't someone make something that works properly/isn't over priced/doesn't have bells and whistles/has accessories available? Is that too much to ask?

Meh. I think I've answered my own question :(

(Apologies for the off topic rant!)

Or just earth it.

But yeah, that'd be illegal...

Syntax error!

If you earth the gala wire you would lode the speed signal to the nav unit, not really important in itself, but if you GPS aerial goes belly up, the nav unit uses the speed signal from the gala and the internal giroscope inside the nav unit to maintain some basic functionality.

Probably easier to fit a flick so it doesn't cause any grief. I fitted them just inside the glovebox on previous installs.;)

Fair enough, I didn't realise the GALA wire had multi function...

It's generally accepted the only way you can connect a non-iPod to a stereo and have control is by buying an iPod...

Sorry!
