Clunking front right suspension

Featured Replies

Hello all,

I have just noticed a metallic clunking from front right suspension when going over bumps. Sounds a bit like as if a bolt is loose, but wheel nuts fine and still driving striahgt and braking well and absorbing bumps fine, and no noise when rocked when motionless.

I know its not the anti-roll bar bush problem cos I have that on the left! It's a different noise.

Other posts have mentioned dropped linkages but I don't really know what that means and how much it would cost.

I'm about 5 months off MOT so could do without taking it in if not needed - can I drive for that long with this problem?

is 2000 X comfort model.

Thanks

It will be your anti roll bar drop links I suspect.

The parts aren't very expensive and I don't think that you will have to splash out a ridiculous amount on labour (it doesn't take very long to replace them).

If you turn your wheels sharp right and look in to the wheel arch on (I think) the passenger side, you will see a piece of metal approximately 0.75cm (I think!) thick and about 20 or 30cm long that is pretty much vertical. Mine is gold in colour, I believe. The bushes at either end of this piece of metal are what wear and "knock" :)

They are about £8.50 each give or take, its not a long job, but requires a little bit of brute force and ignorance.

It could be the spring - try turning the steering wheel when stood still (with engine running) and see if you can hear a clucking sound then

OK - I will try these diagnosis tips when I cna get the car on the flat (I live on a hill and have to park on the kerb - probably doesn;t help suspension!) and in the light.

Thanks all.
