Add ESP ?

Featured Replies

Has anyone got an idea if its possible and how much it would cost to fit ESP (Electronic Stability Programme) into my Skoda Octavia 1.9TDI PD Elegance (oct2007)

TIA,

Kris

Probably not the most constructive answer, but the most realistic.....

It will cost whatever the difference is between selling your current car and buying one with ESP fitted!

The wiring, sensors, control modules, stripping out of the current car to enable fitting, etc required would make it a wholly uneconomic adventure.

Niall

it would cost massively more than that, some sensors alone cost hundreds let alone buying at all and getting it all fitted. expect £1000+ to get it fitted easily.

You don't really need ESP, you need a better training!

Get the book "Roadcraft: The Essential Police Driver's Handbook" and then enrol in a IAM and or ROSPA course to improve on your skills, well worth it.

yeah, training is the answer to everything

Skid pan training is really fun... scares the living..... out of you the 1st time you do and then after about ten times you learn to control the car.

Makes you a better drive on the public road, ever one should do it!

thats all well and good but when your driving along worrying about the figures at work and wondering what your going to cook for dinner and all of a sudden you have 1/2 a second to react to another car or other obstacle on a corner on the wet that training has very little chance of doing anything as you've already stamped the brakes and yanked the wheel to try and get round the obstacle and your starting to slide towards a kerb that was only 15ft away and by the time you realise your sliding is only 2ft and you have no hope of saving it. where as esp would have stopped you from sliding at all :)

As stated above it would be far cheaper to buy a new car with it already on!

I seem to recall seeing something a few years back on TV where they tested cars with ESP vs ones with normal ABS etc on the same track road, and ESP made very little difference, it's the guy behind the wheel:) that made all the difference! In fact they went as far to say ESP makes people think a car won't skid no matter what when that's totally untrue.

Same happen with ABS a few years, Joe public all thought ABS will mean you can stop on oily iced roads at 70mph in under 10m!

Anyway this is all get a bit OT now....

James.

My 2008 Octy doesn't have ESP either. Having had 2 Golfs with ESP during the previous 9 years, I did wonder about it. Then I thought about it and actually I only remember the ESP cutting in once or twice, so I don't think being without it is a big deal.

its only got to save your life once. and to say it makes no difference is complete twaddle, brothers focus has ABS and no ESP and coming round an unknown corner on a country road when it tightened up slightly and he had to brake a bit it started to step out slightly. my octavia has never got out of shape in any way what so ever with the esp on and thats with me trying my best to upset it.

In the state of mind that you describe you should not be driving. Driving is not someting that you do with half your mind, you shoiuld have all your attention on controlling 1 1/2 tons of flying metal!

You might want to go to EuroNcap site:

Euro NCAP - For safer cars | ESC Fitment

It seems only about 1/4 of UK Octavia drivers have it! It's standard fit in Nordic countries it seems....

My car has it but not by order only model in stock had it so...

so by your standards about 90% of drivers shouldn't be on the road, on behalf of most of the country sorry for having a life

most accidents are caused by to many people not paying attention to the road and their surroundings, why do you think when police do a purge on people using their mobiles they catch so many???

Thanks to all of you for your responses...

- Just to let you know - I have my driver license for 15 years and I am an active driver since... and I am not using my mobile while driving :)

Back onto the topic - it would cost loads, and you're better off swapping the car :)

Obviously you haven't seen this episode of fifth gear where they tested a car with ESP off and then on? To be honest after watching this every car should have it. It's unbelievable and the test was on ice

Watch from 6 mins on, other stuff about traction control etc which seems good too.
