Final call - server build - discount

Just a final call, in case I find a discount / facility, otherwise it's suns!

Premis is to install ubuntu 8.04, I know it, I don't know solaris sadly.

Raid 10, both apparently can do this of the associated cards. SAS as it's a 1u box, space at co-lo is by the U and power consumption / bandwidth...unless I pay for the 10Mb unmetered :D

Final thoughts as it will be ordered very shortly; incidentally I'm on the sun start up's program so get a good discount on the sun option; it's about the same price as the dell.

Don't worry abuot not knowing Solaris; if you did know it you'd only hate it :D

Sorry to take this of topic (PM if you prefer) but can I ask where you've decided on colo? And approx costs?

Thanks,

Why not CentOS rather than Ubuntu.. IIRC CentOS will be rock solid as it uses slightly older better tested software and has support for 7 years  and has a major release every 18-24 months. Where as Ubuntu seems to be more bleeding edge with less stable software and has a major release every 6 months. CentOS is also Enterprise class and while it might not have the huge user community ubuntu has, most RHEL and fedora stuff applies. Just my 2 pence worth.

Cue the linux distro argument

CentOS is a free version of RedHat Enterprise Linux. They just take the RHEL, remove the stuff they can't use and then release.

Similar level of stability to Ubuntu server versions, but I'd rather have Ubuntu server editions due to apt every single time. It's got 5 years support too.

Personally I'd get Solaris x86 on a PC have a play and see what you think before you write it off.

I know I've said this before Colin, but What about the T1/T2 hardware? Much better at dealing with the high thread count of web serving than a quad core Xeon IMHO.

Mark,

True I just don't know it. By that I mean I don't know how ubuntu etc perform on it and perhaps more importantly how the webserving software we use handles it. Alot of documentation and examples exists and when it's late that helps. Also things like plesk withdrew support for solaris. Sorry to say, I don't know if ubuntu even works on it.

I did try solaris on a vm, it got to the install and fell over, re downloaded all the images, checked, and it did it again...it went past my knowledge and failed the can I be ... test.

As to ubuntu, the lts gives plenty of stability.

As to co-lo, melbourne in manchester, priced by the u and power/traffic. Have 7 servers with them at the moment, no complaints from me on them.

Well if the sun isnt too pricy then a single harpertown isn't bad.

If you want x86 and it was my call, plus if the site can deal with it I'd be waiting for nahaelem to come out myself due to the removal of the FSB and better scaling it may well offer.
