Has anyone tried any of the following:

Featured Replies

I know this has probably been done to death but I'm really useless at the search on here.

I'm having enough trouble choosing the style of alloys, now I'm unsure on what rubber to fit. The choices are:-

Bridgestone SO3's

Toyo T1-S

Yokohama A539

Falken FK451

Which is the best for grip in wet and dry? Best value for money? Which will last the longest?

Help me please as I've read about the toyo's and bridgestone and both are rated very highly.

Mike

Not on the Furby, but had SO3's on the Scooby and they did 20k miles and were fantastic wet and dry :) They have very stiff side-walls which means cornering is very stable, but I think we paid about 120 quid a corner at Micheldever for 17" so maybe not the cheapest.

Toyo's are a softer compound so very sticky, but don't last as long as a harder compound like the Bridgestones - Scooby guys getting 7-10k out of them!

The Goodyear's are meant to be good too, but I notice they're not on your list.

Chris

i am running toyo proxes t1s's on my furby (205/17) grip is excellent in the dry and they give good grip in the wet and they shift water well too however in the recent 1 or 2 days of really warm weather i found they got a bit greasy, cant really comment on treadwear as they are quite new but i have done about 8000 miles and there is still plenty of tread left (they look cool as well).

I've used 2 full sets of Goodyear Eagle F1's on my Impreza and they are the best i've ever used, the toyos are "ropey" in the wet IMHO, but thats all on the scoob.

Heaven knows how this applies to the particular size/type you would fit on a Furby but can only assume they're the same across the board.

Damn, how many ex-scooby drivers are there on here!

Toyo Proxes can be a bit funny in the wet and the cold, but in the dry they provide excellent levels of grip... I've not needed to change a set yet, my fronts have been on for 10K+ now and have a small amount to go before they need replacing. They've also done a full conedodgers day too, which took a lot of tread off the corners. :D

Obviously they wear badly, but at

problem I find with tyres is that they can vary - my vRS came with bridgestone ER30 which were very good wet and dry so for the first time ever I insisted on getting exactly the same again,The new ones are made in a different country and are not as good - especially in the wet!

Chipped Furby vRS + Toyo Proxes + greasy wet roads =

Superb tyres in the dry, and very good in the wet, but iffy in between IMO

Quite a few, then some more.

so bridgestone's are great for grip and last well and have a stiff sidewall which is good.

Toyo are a good alrounder but wear fairly quickly but are cheaper.

Chris I forgot to put the goodyear F1's down anyone had these?

Basically it comes down to this I guess I do about 20-25K a year and I need a tyre that grips well in the wet and dry and doesn't wear too badly.

Consider the P-Zero's (4 possible options) Good wear, fab grip in the dry and not to bad in the wet unless your on the markers but then I guess any tyre on 2mm of tread in standing water is going to buck and float at 70mph.

The Toyo's were fab on the 4x4, I had them on the rs for a few k as they were on it already and I was less than impressed compared to previous experince on the 4x4. Turn in was nice but grip was lost quite early.

I'll have another set of P-Zeros tomorrow, but would as you have done look at the other options. Afterall Bridgestone seem to do okay in the wet for the boys in red.

well yeah too true they seem to do very well for the reds! And to be honest I haven't anything really bad about them apart from the cost.

I'm running Yoko A539's on mine and have to say that I'm not at all impressed in the wet! In the dry they are better, but I'm not complaining too much. I did get them cheap. :D

it's really a "toss up" between Bridgestone and toyo now. Toyo are cheaper but I'd rather pay abit more and know that the tyres will work when I need them, after all it's the only contact you have with the road.

Anymore input or veiw on the above two would be of help. It looks like I will be ordering the alloys at the weekend.

Cheers

Mike

Never tried the Bridgestones & never tried the Falkens. Had a set of Yokos on my Corrado which were OK in the dry but I was never confident with them in the wet. Had 3 or 4 sets of Toyos & currently have them on my Ibiza. I can't really fault them. OK, so they understeer a little in greasy conditions, but it is managable.

I'd probably go for Toyos (maybe the new T1-R) when I put the 17s on the Fabia, or Goodyear F1 GSD3s. I've heard good things about these, although they are more expensive.

Go for the Bridgestones, fantastic in the wet/dry everywhere.

I can't praise them enough. I'm waiting for my Michelins to wear out :)

Nokian NRVi.............a bit left field, and I don't drive any flavour of vRS.

I drive a 2.0 Octy, but as ColinD and Tavia4x4 can attest, I'm a "well-built" sort of chap, which means HEAVY RIGHT FOOT.

I've done about 2000 miles on these tyres now, and they wipe the floor with the Avon ZV1's and Firestone F680's i had before. Tons of grip in the dry, surprising the way the grip starts to feel like it's going and then comes back really strong in a foot-to-the-floor corner.

And with the recent weather we've been enjoying, road traffic conditions permitting natch, I've not experience anything less than a minor loss of traction/grip.

danm you javaman lol throw something else into the choice! I think I'm swaying towards the bridgestones, ferrari used them so they cant be that bad.

Does anywhere do an independent review of these tyres?

Does anywhere do an independent review of these tyres?

Evo mag did a review of 8 tyres on a Focus RS, I believe, about a year ago. Might still have the article at home, but I don't think the SO3's faired that well. Goodyear won, but they would - the testing was done at the Goodyear tyre-testing facility ;)

Chris

The EVO tyre test results were:

1st - Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3

2nd - ContiSportContact

3rd - Toyo Proxes TS-1

4th - Pirelli P7000

5th - Michelin Pilot Sport

6th - Dunlop SP Sport 9000

7th - Bridgestone Potenza

8th - Avon ZZ3

My Michelin piolts, had the traction control working, coming off a roundabout in 3rd, about 2000revs, in the wet. gave it a good bootfull, though.

Probably try different tyres when these wear out.

Good fun though :D

Jonno(think i'll turn off the traction control, see what happens)
