TDI Turbo

Featured Replies

Hi

I have a 110bh version of the TDI. Following a small accident I have taken off the intercooler only to find it full of oil!:( So I guess the seals have gone in the turbo:(.

I haven't looked yet but how easy/difficult is it to change the turbo on one of these?

Can anyone recomend a turbo upgrade?

Thanks

Don't change the turbo, it's just oil from the breather system that settles in the lowest point of the intake piping.

Clean out the intercooler using the guide on here and re-connect it all up, and bob's your uncle!

To avoid it happening in the future you could vent the breather to atmosphere, or to a catch tank.

If it was the piston ring type seals that were worn badly inside the turbo, you would know about it!

Well there's no big clouds of smoke to sugest it's been burning oil but it was a bit of a suprise to see how much I poured out the intercooler so I can't see it being a breather.

Yes I appreciate what your saying it just seems to be a lot of oil and I would normally say it's the turbo seal.

Mileage 181,000 or there abouts.

Labour cost are not applicable as I would be doing the job but yeah about 700 sheets for a new one.

you will be surprised mate and with the milage you got on her.

I replaced my SMIC for the forge FMIC and the old one was full of oil and only had <50K on clock. got a good large glass of oil out of the system and pos a pint. there was a lot.

If the car is driving fine mate I wouldnt bother just be prepared incase. but I dont think it is broke jus yet. best thing to do is clean it out as best as you can and check again in a month.

I was worried too, cant wait to see how much there is in the FMIC now lol

might check in the summer.

When I took mine off to clean it there was about half a cupful of oil in there, that was after about 100k miles (its a petrol though not a diesel)

The intercooler is where it mostly collects because its at the lowest point of the inlet pipework, plus its being cooled by the air blowing across the intercooler so the warm oil vapour will condense and turn back into liquid oil to collect in there :(

If your turbo sounds alright I wouldn't worry too much about it, take the pipes off in a few weeks and if there's loads more oil in there then I'd suspect something wrong.

You can use a can of 'powerboost' afterwards to clean the system. I agree that uness you are burning oil eg topping up inbetween services a noticable amount, I would not go chasing a new turbo!

Greg.
