golf mk2 gti conversion

Featured Replies

im starting a project to completely rebuild a 1.3 golf, F reg and convert it to a 1.8 8v.

is there any possible way to take the clocks back to 0 when the cars finished?

the car will have the engine rebuilt the suspension and components replaced, brakes uprated power steering fitted ( i think) and resprayed when i find a good airbrush specialist

any clue?

thanks, chris

Best bet is to find a GTi that it nailed body wise (plenty about) then feast on everything you need, get one with PAS and you have a complete donor car and probably spares to sell on. Simple enough to take apart.

Why an 8v though? KR would be really worth all the work, not anymore difficult to fit than the 8v.

its my first attempt at an engine swap, and its to keep it simple then i would probarbly change again in the future when i have more experience in doing so but its parked up now waiting to be trailored to a garage im renting for the work to start. when its finished i need to find somewhere to have some airbrush work done i have some ideas for the finished paintjob, but thats a looooong long way away as its expensive and wil be the last thing to be done

Chris,

Register on clubgti.com Plenty of VW Golf nuts on there to help you. I was a user until I went to the Skoda side :)

hi,

I had a MK 3 Golf GTI and at 32000 miles the speedo/rev counter unit failed and the vw dealers put a new one in,as you can't transfer the mileage onto the new unit,it started from zero.

The easiest way to get milage back to 0 is to buy a new speedo head. I think I mught have one if your interested.

Also golfgti.co.uk is a great source of information - used to be a member there but I seen the light and went to the Skoda side of life!!

Cheers

well thats the plan ;)

im still worrying about what to do for an engine though

1.8 8v gti engine, i need sub frame, driveshafts, brakes, front crossmember?? (engine mount on it?) fuel pump and lines, and is it carbed? what about loom?

i seem clueless i know but its all experience and i know im capable, plus the cars being trailored up tomorow so its late to back out!

So buy a MOT fail GTi, then you will have everything and you know where it all goes.

good luck with it... i must admit i still have a soft spot for the mk2 golf, i think i might have one as my next project

All mk2 golfs used the same subframe and front cross members.

If you are going to put on 239mm 8v brakes you might as well go straight for 256mm 16v setup or 280mm G60.

To go carbed to injection the amount of parts is a lot and with the price of cars at the moment i would get a complete 8v gti with a shot body then transfer everything.

Had a couple of mk2 gti's myself.

yeah, i intended on everything being upgraded. brakes, suspension, engine, and the audio system will be competition standards, i have a good friend who has opened up a shop in wolverhampton, his prices are low anyway but called in today asking about a complet build for the back of the golf and it will only come to around £500, where bass junkies in wolverhampton wouldnt quote me because "its going to cost more than the cars worth just for the parts"

i think that is the best bet to buy an mot failed gti and strip that of everything i need and sell the rest. i did consider rebuilding the engine aswell, but i have been advised against it, and told i should just stick to head work if the engine is sweet..

if i was to change the cam and valves, would i be looking at much more power? and should it be put on a dyno to have set up properly? and would it have to have a cat if i brought an 80's gti?

none of this new-fangled turbocharged fuel injected stuff though:)

narhh

i like old cars, a favourite has allways been capri :P, i like big yank cars too, had a try in a pontiac transam up and down the road and couldn't wipe the smile from my face it was a monster

but as it stands in reality i dont think im going to be having one of those in the near future :P and the golfs are my next favourite :)

If you want to zero-mile the car with a new speedo head, keep the old one too, because it will prove the mileage the head was changed at, which will make the car easier to sell on.

So buy a MOT fail GTi, then you will have everything and you know where it all goes.

Have to say, Ross has hit the nail on the head with this. Your best bet is to buy a tatty but complete car as a donor, will make life infitely easier for you, and need not end up costing you much.

i hate to state the obvious, but why not just go out and buy a gti instead of swapping all the bits, you can get them for peanuts

Well head work will give you a little power increase but the best mod for a 8v for power increase and cash is to use a mk3 2.0 8v bottom end and easy enough to do yourself. I did the same with my 1.8 16v. Went from the standard 138bhp to a corrado 2.0 16v using the 1.8 cams and kicking out 172bhp before it was even setup properly.

Build thread of my old mk2.

Very true, just bought a Capri Green 8V on a H plate with tax and MOT for £200.

i keep thinking, take out my vrs engine, fit it to my mk2 then fit a bam 225bhp engine from a tt in my vrs.........job done, everyone is a winner!

Or what about an 8v........a g60 (supercharged) engine will fit with no issue at all, engines cost less than 20vts too, recently sold a g60 lump with gearbox minus charger for around £650.

The standard 8v engine is disappointing as stock.

Yeah i know, the idea was experience to be honest but im seriously considering it.. what you reckon to keeping the 1.3? and tuning? if a swift gti kicks out 100 brake standard 1.3 then maybe this stands a chance?

if i could get 100 bhp out of this i wouldnt hesitate because the 1.8 8v is only 112 or something..

tom??

I think im going to start a thread in the projects forum :) il get some pictures the weekend and get it done

hmm what about just changing the bottom end.. leave the head on with modification and put a 1.6 bottom end? if i did it that way would there be much greif?
