uh oh coolant low

Featured Replies

Hi,

I drive a 2001 Fabia Elegance done about 66k.

Just checked the oil and coolant levels and the coolant is about 5-10mm below minimum. Is it safe to drive it? Being Sunday night I can't get any from anywhere and I have to work tomorrow.

I had it refilled once abut 6 months ago, is it normally to be low already?

On a side note, how quickly should the oil go down? It's about a third down on the top level even though I had an oil and filter change last month.

Cheers guys

No coolant should need adding to the engine, for the life of the car. If you need to add coolant then you have a leak somewhere. Should be ok to drive though, I guess you have been up until now.

Realistically a little will be lost though, but IIRC it does not hurt/may even be required to replace the coolant every 2 years or something?

Keep an eye on it though, and mention it at the next service if it is not too bad I guess?

I would top it up a little with some water in the meantime as you have to drive it, but book it in.

I now have some coolant which I plan to use to top up in the morning. One question: the manual suggests to use 40% coolant 60% water, whilst the bottle suggests 50/50. Which do I do? The bottle also says see their website (Welcome to the Comma Oil & Chemicals Ltd. Website) for manufacturer recommendations but I see none!

I'd go for 50-50 then that would bring the strength up (very slightly), just in case someone in the past had just added water!
