VRS Cam Belt

Featured Replies

Morning All,

Just a quick one looking for confirmation:

The car is due for its 50k service and I'm planning on getting the Cam Belt Done at the same time.

Could someone just confirm the following:

For the Cam Belt Change, I want toe Cam Belt, Tensioner and Water Pump all done

Water Pump needs to be the one with the Metal Impellor and not Plastic

Can anyone think of anything else that needs doing at the same time?

Can anyone confirm if Main Dealers know about the Metal Impellor version and are able to source this?

Ta

Mike

No, it dosn't need to be a metal impella. They have a 1 year guarantee, not a 2 year like the VW one. Also, if the metal one fails and takes out the cambelt/engine, you don't get a new engine for free. VW timing parts, if they fail, come with a 'repair/replace' guarantee.

Yes, the plastic ones go, but not often withing the 4 years 60k range so if you stick to good service intervals you shold be fine.

I have fitted metal though, it's all about what people are comfortable with I guess.

Any motor factor will supply you with the metal impella pattern water pump.

As for other stuff at the same time, I'm a fan of flushing these engines as they (more in the passat I think) suffer from sludge build up. Then an oil change/servicing. You could eat your dinner off the inside of mine. If you like eating from an oily plate ;-)

I thought the water pump was metal as standard now anyway? When I got mine done at a Skoda garage they confirmed it was the metal impellor when I asked. I could be wrong though, or they told porkies. Either way, it should be guaranteed if it's done by the main dealer

They may as well change the alternator belt while they're there I guess.

Think you have it covered other than that

Good Good.

Thanks for the comments

Metal impellors are not from VAG on the 1.8T.

You should also change the tensioner damper.

Agree re VAG = plastic.

Interesting about the damper - do you see trouble with them Ross?

Greg.
