How did your Octavia cope with the cold snap?

Featured Replies

My VRS would still start, but had no power for the first minute or two. It wouldn't pull at less than 3000 revs, which isn't ideal if you're trying to pull away gently in slippery conditions.

My wife says it was kangarooing up the road until it had warmed up, when she used it.

It seemed to me like it was probably too lean for the conditions?

The starter motor squealed more than usual but no trouble starting. I always leave it for a minute or two anyway until the secondary air system has stopped working otherwise it kangaroos. Performance seemed to be much better than usual, now the weather's got milder the car doesn't feel as quick.

Also managed to test out the ASR on several occasions :)

If you think it was running lean maybe the intake air temp sensor needs checking?

Mine was actually good as gold! No noises or dodgyness.

I changed the intake temperature sensor before the summer and coolant temperature sensor a couple of months back, so that may have helped things.

The only things that happened were the drivers side washer jet nozzle degrading (I'm guessing the water in the nozzle froze and damaged it), but I changed them both at the weekend for the sum of £3.50 so solved. And the small scratches I've put on the winscreen from scraping the ice off it, which annoyed me a bit. I've bought some de-icer spray now to avoid using the scraper again!

Keeping the salt out of the engine bay is a losing battle though.... I hate salt!

No problems at all with mine, which I was surprised about considering I hadn't started it in over 4 weeks. Fingers crossed it will stay that way!

Absolutely fine no differance at all except of course having to drive much slower at 04:45 in the morning and minus 4 he he he :thumbdwn:

That can also be a dirty throttle body. Is yours > 80K miles?

No problems, mpg suffered a lil but otherwise going strong.

Secondary air pump is starting to get a lil noisy, if/when it warms up I will need to drill the rivets and pop some bolts in it.

No problems at all with my remapped 4X4. :)

no problem to report on my 04 vrs only use it at weekends

should i clean my throttle body as mine has done 70 000, if so what do clean them with?

not too bad, thanks for asking :)

found that the glowplug relay's a bit dodgy, also the mpg's gone down from 55ish to 50ish.

otherwise no real problems

Carburettor cleaner, normally comes as a spray. You can get it at any motor factors.

Less than 70k.

It seems OK now the cold snap is over, so I don't think it's the throttle body.

Forgot to leave the glowplug light to go out on one start which sounded a bit rough. Other than that sound as a pound.

I used the traction control by accident a couple of times (which basically tells me it still works). Otherwise nowt.

Other than the battery going flat (because i hadnt used it for around 3 weeks before crimbo)

Its been fine

Not had this octy all that long (just coming up 3 months)... but its starting to get the usual octy niggles... in the sub 4 Degree temps.. i have to do the usual wait for a minute or so after starting engine, otherwise i get the jumpy kangaroo start. Oh and the bloody heating vents on the dash are PATHETIC! which i already knew from my last octy lol

Other than that, and this is at any temp, am beginning to get the hesitation.... which i know could quite easily be TB, or one of the connecting pipes... yet to try the Throttle Body clean myself

no problems with 107k on the clock, although because i dont have to drive it to work i have been avoiding driving alltogether just in case, and have parked it in a safer spot than normal haha

The battery died on Thursday. I'm wondering if the poor running when cold could have been a symptom of a dying battery?

We got up to -17 celsius here and all was well. The starter motor squeals in the cold and I always wait until the revs drop to around 1000 idle. Other than that all was well (well maybe the one morning where the car was frosted and I had nothing to defrost it with and had to wait for it to warm up and defrost the windows. Then I got the 99.9 l/100km average for the next 5 minutes :) )

Which reminds me of when I used to work on top of the South Downs. It rains, froze, snowed, and froze some more duing the day, and we camoe out to thick, solid ice on car windows. I spent 15 minutes with the heater on full to get the windows to thaw enough to scrape them clear! De-icer spray just wouldn't touch it!
