VRS Torque

Featured Replies

When I first got the VRS back in November last year, I thought that the power all came in one huge lump, and got used to short shifting, which I thought was the best way to make use of the torque. I was basically using 2,000 to 3,500 RPM.

Well after sticking the foot to the floor in 3rd tonight, and leaving it there to 4,500 RPM, I was surprised to see 80MPH appear very quickly on the speedo.

So it would appear that my backside has been lying to me.

Well that's the turbo cleaned this week. :D

At the end of last October, two runs on a famously-accurate Dastek dynamometer at Wallace Performance in Aberdeen revealed the following about my totally standard 04-plate vRS:

Max Power: 136.1 bhp @ 4117 rpm

Max Torque 228 ft/lb @ 2085 rpm

And all without smoke or flat spots.

After carefully pouring over the graphs, 4100 rpm (or just before it to allow for inherent reaction time and rev needle delays) has revealed itself to be the ideal point to change up --- power is at max and there's still a rather useful 177ft/lbs of torque available, which is not that far off the 190 ft/lbs at 3500 rpm and way more than the 140 ft/lbs at 4500 rpm.
