Help! Custom fit components Octy Mk1

Featured Replies

Has anybody fitted custom components in the front of their Octavia Mk1?

I bought the Apline 17cm custom fit components the other day and a pair of VW/AUDI/SKODA speaker adaptor wires. I had a quick go today trying to fit one of the speakers, took the grill off, exchanged speakers and used the wire adaptor and tried the radio. I kept the original tweeter wired in. The new speaker didnt work at all and the other speakers in the car worked but were very crackled.

I am going to try again at the weekend but I was wondering if anybody could shed any light as to why the crackling and why the new speaker didnt produce any sound.

What do I need to do with the new tweeters? They appear to have a pair of female spades and male spades on the same wire. Is there a stock crossover that they need to be plugged into?

I thought they were supposed to be a straight swap for the standard skoda speakers.

Any help is appreciated.

So all the standard speakers work fine? Are the Comp speakers new? What make are they? Do you want to install the new tweeters in place of the standard ones? Component speakers tend to come with a crossover of some description, either a small box type or an in line type along the wiring.

Basically the existing wiring come to the crossver where it is split; one set going to the tweeters and one set going to the bass/mid.

on the octy? do i remember the oe tweeter comes down to the back of the oe mid? theres no actual skoda crossover.

if the new componants havent got crossovers, do they have a cylinder style high pass filter?

if im going down the wrong track here im sorry.

as for the speaker wire adaptor things ive had trouble with these in the past :orb_angry

IMO you can beat good ol bullit conectors, some vauxhall wire adaptor drove me nuts for ages, the wires going into the actual plug was a bad conection .. damit

best plan wouldve been a any set of nice 6.5 n tweets , just not too deep :orb_devil

Cut the stock connectors off and use some spade connectors. Try the stock speaker first them the component. As for the tweeters; you can either try and fit them in the stock housing or reposition them to the top corners of the dash angled towards you.

im going to go with the idea, the mid will have 2 male spades on the pos and neg,

and the tweeter will hook to the 2nd of each,

if your still having troubel with the wire adaptors, and your not plannin to ever put oe back in id go with just get your self some female spades and go down that road, do the tweeters come with a wire attached then mate? with a cylinder bit inline? swapping to the alpine tweeter shouldnt be too hard,

the biggest help for tweets is if you can obtain a small amount of buytl, wonderfull stuff, a small ring around the tweeters insures the sounds goes forward and not leak to the sides , and also hold the tweeter inplace , then just carfully take it in with the help of a glue gun :orb_jacks

I have to agree here. get some spade connectors and plug into the original wiring, no need to cut them. Also pick yourself up a multimetre, it'll show you which is the positive connector if you have lost it!

The crackling is going to be a little harder to troubleshoot.... As all the other speakers have the cackling, do this happen with the radio set on CD or just radio, or both? It could be a short in the new speakers causing the amplifier to try to compensate, affecting the rest of the speakers. The best test is to unplug the new speakers one at a time to try see which one is causing it.

Can you had the radio out of the dash? If so it could also be a loose connection at the rear of the unit.

Hope this helps

Thanks for the replies.

I have been on nights so have been unable to have another go at fitting them.

Having read the posts I am going to go with the idea that the crackling sound was due to the wiring adaptor lead not been fitting flush so it was causing a short. Theres a little tab on them which I think needs stanley knifing off to ensure they fit snug.

With regards to the tweeters, they do have wiring with cylinder black thing on them and at the end of the wires there are a pair of male and a pair of female spades. (positive and negative) so four connectors in total. This is the bit that it confusing me. Where do these need to plugged into?

Looking at the new main components speaker there is only a postive and female spade connector as you would normally find so nowhere here for the tweeters to connect.

I think I'll try that butly if the tweeters dont fit snug when I finally connect them!

I've just bought a set of these as well as they are such a good price at the moment. They cost me £29 delivered (brand new).

I didn't use any wiring adapters as they rarely give the best connection and often cause more problems than they solve.

A quick check to see if a speaker is bad is to use the balance and fader controls so that only one speaker is fully driven at any time.

RwBaldwin, how did you fit these speakers?

What did you do the tweeters to connect them? Did you just plug them in to the wiring for the original tweeters?

The speakers are in. Thanks for your help in this thread,

if anyone wants to know how they fit please ask me. Do not buy adaptors leads, waste of time, didnt work one bit.
