Randomly Clicking Relay

Featured Replies

Got a relay that seems to randomly click with the steering, especially when the car isn't warm and you're doing a lot of steering, such as trying to get into a reverse park.

Any suggestions as to which one it could be before I start trying to get to the relay box.

I assume there are some relays under the steering wheel area, as otherwise I'm going to have a fun time working out what the noise it.

Can't really think which relay it could be.

As well as those on the relay plate, there is a relay in the convenience controller and IIRC the climatronic has a relay too.

any problems with the stalks? is can you feel anything through the steering wheel?

Mine does that when parking, going back and forward a couple of times to straighten up.

My former car a (newer) Passat did exactly the same thing - assumed it was some modern VAG thing I didn't know about.

I've noticed it too when reversing into Mrs AWOL's works carpark to pick her up

It reversing will be switching to recirc so as not to pull in fumes.

Me just dont it again, pulling into the drive (my garage is at a bit if an angle to the drive so i have to swing round wide then line up).

Seems to click behind the steering wheel each time it passes centre. Isnt to do with speed sensitive PAS is it? (i.e. making the steering lighter for maneouvering). Dont even know if this is a feature but just a guess as to why it might do it. Interestingly enough though, after i got out, stopped the engine and opened the garage door, i dont think it did it when i pulled into the garage

I had this annoying relay sound and took it back to the dealer and it turned out to be the a/c control, what ever he done it cured it .

I've heard this when sitting idling (waiting on SWMBO normally ). It's like someone tapping their nails on the inside of the dash. I thought it was the Climate unable to make it's mind up about something.

I've not noticed anything untoward.

I'll add this strange noise to the occasional squeaking engine I get after switching off. Like escaping air it squeaks every 5 seconds for a minute or so.

That might well be a faulty purge valve/seal on the top of carbon canister (next to the coolant expansion tank). The cap on the expansion cap can also make a similar noise.

Seems to click behind the steering wheel each time it passes centre.

My description was actually rubbish :)

The above is more accurate - on both cars it was related to steering rather than gear selection, but there's obviously a lot of steering involved with reverse parking (and then straightening up 4 times, for those of us not gifted at parallel parking / paranoid about scratching Zenith's).
