1.6 MPi Engine trouble. Help!!!

Featured Replies

did you check the valve clearance agaings the service manual ?

The valve clearances are not adjustable.

Ok so yesterday after work I thought I better try and start the car as I hadn't touched it before christmas.

Started first time and no hint of burning any oil and ran extremely smoothly.

I also left the cap off of the coolant res and to get rid of any air in the system, so I now have nice toasty heaters rather than a cold air blowing at me, oh and the thermostat reading worked properly which is typical after ordering a new one a few hours before.

So what next???

I'll replace the thermostat anyway just to be on the safe side, but what else should I try?

Change the oil & filter,

Another new set of plugs but with a slightly higher heat range

Change the HT leads as I don't know how old they are etc

Anything else???

If the stats working now I'd prob leave it.

Is the car running fine now?

If it's running fine now then I prob wouldnt touch it until service time or if something else pops off tbh.

forgot to write in stuff.

I have no expertise on engines but I noted that the car had already had a top overhaul and is still displaying worryingly serious problems like oil burning. When that happened to me the engine was near the end. How many miles are on the clock -bear in mind it may have been round once already? I'd watch the money because it may be uneconomic to keep shelling out if the car needs a new engine and possibly other things too.

PSA - Peugeot Societie Anonyme (French designaiton of limited liability company); as elsewhere, the makers of Citroen and Peugeot cars.

did you sort out the problem ?

I haven't actually had any time to spend on it yet. If the thermostat works when I test it next time I'll leave that one where it is.

I'm thinking about getting shot of it to be honest, it's a good car but when you're 6'6" its a little bit of a squeeze.

So I'll probably change the oil to get rid of any nasty gunk which might be floating about and see what I can get for it.

My wife has an N reg 1.3 felicia which is fairly rough and ready but its the kind of car that'll just keep on going, but I'd trade them both in to get her a similair sized, reliable but cheap runabout.

Any offers??
