Glow Plug Light flashing on Fabia 1.9tdi

Featured Replies

Hello,

I Have a Fabia 1.9tdi 51 plate. Last week the glow plug light started flashing and I am in 2 minds what to do.

1) My local garage said that they can carry out a diagnostics for £40.

2) Is it an idea to purchase a VAG-COM 409.1 to carry this out myself. You can buy from Ebay for £14 inc postage. see link below:

VAG-COM 409.1 USB CABLE FOR VW AUDI SEAT SKODA GOLF OBD on eBay, also, Diagnostic Tools Equipment, Garage Equipment Tools, Cars, Parts Vehicles (end time 13-Feb-09 22:15:23 GMT)

I am assuming this will do the same job and the shareware software will be adequate enough.

Is there also a possibility that there could be an issue with the glow plugs or if this was the case would the light be on solid?

Before you rush out and buy a cable, Check your brake lights!

:iagree: - what I don't know is whether or not Furbies have the same brake light switch issues as Octy 1s do, but that's another possible candidate.

They do.

But they can have a different part number for the switches

but yes same problem

Cheers

ill check the brakes and let you know, I too was wondering about the possible connection with break light switches in octavias and fabias.

Ive driven close to 1000 miles since it started flashing so I'd presumed that i'd either have been rear ended :thumbdwn: or atleast someone would have told me.

Not necessarily. It is not just a brake light switch, it has an input into the engine management system as well. Your brake lights could be working perfectly, but the signal that the ECU gets from it could be non existent or implausible, hence the flashing glow plug light, which also doubles up as an engine management light, Or it could be something as simple as blown bulb or two.

A new brake light switch should cost around £10, and are reasonably straight forward to fit. So for less than the price of a single dealer fault code read you can fix your car and have a VAG Com cable.

1C0945511ARDW (from memory) I think is the part number of the latest (Green) switch, and they are easier to set up than the old purple or black switches.

Cheers,

The break light on the top of the back windscreen is the only one that works, nothing from the other two.

Would that still signal a faulty breal light switch, is there one for the top light and a separate one for the other two?

Two blown bulbs, causes the same fault.

It could be 2 blown bulbs, which is free to check, but I'd put some money on the brake light switch now.

Interesting, when i bought my MKI Octavia Elegance TDi, both brake light bulbs had blown (center one was working) yet there were no warning lights or flashing glow plug light.

Definitely two blown bulbs

yup, it was 2 blown bulbs, once changed warning light went. Cheers for the input folks, saved my a bit of cash.

Just out of interest where is the break light witch located, couldnt find it.

It's a Pedal switch, the name gives it away :P

If you look at the link lummox posted above there are pictures of it.

Just been reading your post's got the same problem. Centre break light working but others not.

Flashing glow plug light and bulb light on dash.

Just changed break light switch on recommendation made no difference. Checked bulbs they look fine.

What else could it be.

Got a fabby vrs 04 if that helps

But have you actually changed the bulbs? Looks can be deceiving.

£1.50 for two bulbs is the first thing i'd have tried

Will try new bulbs but changed 1 bulb about 8 weeks ago. will let you know result.

same thing almost happened to me last night - glow plug symbol flashing. Drove home in busy crazy traffic wondering what it could be.

Checked the brake lights this am - What brake lights!?

Gonna pick up a pedal switch this am.....

does the brake light problem exist on 04 octavia diesel estates

Hi

Yes it can do

Just check the brake lights , but only when the warning light flashes

Glow plug light was flashing intermittantly on my 1.9tdi Fabia elegance. Changed the brake light switch (about £7 for the switch and five minute job to fit) which has completely cured the problem. Some threads on this site say that the new switch should be a fancy colour but my new genuine switch was plain black, although heavily modified from the old one.

The Octavia`s have a different part number to the Fabia

6Q0 IIRC for the Fabi and 1C0 IIRC for the Octy`s

Glad you got sorted

Where abouts is the brake light switch????

Where abouts is the brake light switch????

Brake light switch is under the dashboard in front of the brake pedal, you have to remove the lower dash panel by the pedals to get to it.
