Variable Servicing Question?

Featured Replies

Tell the dealer to sort it out! You didnt pay for them to change the intervals, and advise you will not use them, and will lodge a complaint with Skoda UK.

Why not pop to Autohaus at Riverside and ask them to sort it? Alwways sort stuff out for SWBO when she pops in there. I dont think that pop in place has full diags, and could only reset the indicator, not change its type.

I think you meant SWMBO ! I've got one of those.

When the old octy derv's were on variable you would get 18-30k miles from it just for information, however I take your point about it being more than a bit odd.

If you get the checking the mileage left button regularly and make a mistake you can actually reset the car to fixed service, because the process isn't that dissimilar.

As for the dealer... time to find a new one I think.

Do you know what oil the dealer put in, because if they used the same oil as last time then it's got the standard life oil in which will be exhausted at 10k miles and need changing.

If I twiddle the clock reset knob with the ignition off I get a reading of ~13,000miles.

Does this mean service is due at that mileage or in 13,000 miles time? Also appears to show a clock with 660 on it. Why?

It is due in 13'000 miles.

I guess 660 is the days left, eg 2 years variable.

As I said, there is a reset procedure using the same knob, which resets to fixed intervals.

Also you must make sure you have used the long life oil (VW506.1/VW507 for 2.0TDI, and VW507 only if it has a DPF fitted)

My local dealer always puts cars on a 1 yearly service plan and when challenged told me that Skoda insist that cars be checked for safety at yearly intervals. I was told that my car must be serviced every year and the oil changed. The next car I bought was from another dealer who said when he handed it over, see you in 2 years. I am now changing my car and went to see the local dealer who again said I must have my car serviced every year, waiting for delivery of my new car but from another dealer, they gave me a better deal as well.

Your "1 year" dealer is IMHO lying to make more money.

Commonly it's called deception and IIRC there is an offence related to this. eg they intentionally deceived to to take money from you.

Doubt it's worth much, but I'd report them to trading standards.

I just take my business elsewhere, I have now bought 4 new Octavias but only one from my local dealer. It did not take me long to learn the lesson.

No but it's worth a call to TS or skoda, because they are obviously screwing people over.

In all honesty my wife did say to the sales man, when we were looking for a new car this time, that I was unhappy with they way they planned the service intervals and he went and talked to the service manger. He came back and reiterated their policy but "if" I really wanted to go against their advice the new car could be set to extended service.

I did go against their advice and again went elsewhere for the new car which is due to be built week 45

As above, name and shame to Skoda UK & trading standards.

Might one also say "Review Centre"?

Same issue on a Dutch forum (skodaforum.nl) - where it is stated that with variable servicing, the 'cold' drives are taken into account. The longer your trips, the longer you will be able to wait to go and service your car. People who mainly have short trips, should have their service done on a yearly base. And my car (with DPF) needs 5w30, on account of the DPF.

i have my octavia on variable servicing so not due until just under 40,000 as it had done just shy of 20,000 when i bought it. I suggested to the dealer that i have it serviced anyway at yearly/10,000mile intervals. His reply was that i would be welcome to do so but would be wasting my money as the car shouldnt need it. He said that the quality of longlife oil helped to prolong the srvice intervals.

I have now done over 10,000 miles in 8 months and i am fighting the urge to get it serviced as have always got my cars serviced every 10,000/12month which ever comes first. Dont think it can harm to do so but dont want to be handing over money needlessly.

Anyone else on variable who services their car at earlier intervals?

If doing your mileage danroly, I'd stick with Variable.

Yup. Mine was in Variable when I got it. I do mostly short trips on commute to work about 4 miles each way. It required a service after 14 months and 9500 miles. Now it's on Fixed needless to say.
